Stella falls overboard and is rescued
Kensuke's KingdomStella falls overboard and is rescued during the family’s round-the-world voyage, turning a routine stretch of sailing into an emergency that tests the family’s practiced response. They bring her back aboard after repeated attempts, and the incident leads to a strict new safety rule: Stella must wear a harness on deck.
The fall and the emergency
The incident takes place on February 7, hundreds of miles out in the Indian Ocean. The Peggy Sue is pitching and rolling as Michael takes a navigation lesson with a sextant, Michael’s mother steers, and Michael’s father is below in the galley. Stella, who rarely comes up on deck except in calm conditions, is at the bow when Michael sees her go overboard.
The family has rehearsed a man-overboard drill dozens of times in The Solent with Barnacle Bill. Michael shouts and points while his parents turn the boat around, lower the sails, and start the engine. The drill gives each of them an immediate role, but the rough conditions and the challenge of bringing the boat close enough make the rescue difficult.
Repeated attempts and rescue
Michael’s father leans over the side to reach Stella without wearing his safety harness. Michael’s mother tries to bring the boat in slowly, but a wave carries Stella away just as they approach. They turn back for another attempt, with Michael continuing to point and shout.
The family makes three approaches without success: each time the boat passes too quickly or Stella remains out of reach. By the next attempt she is barely paddling and is in danger of going under. This time the Peggy Sue comes close enough for Michael’s father to grab her. Together, the three family members haul Stella aboard by her collar and tail.
The rescue is followed by sharply different reactions. Michael’s father praises him, while Michael’s mother gives his father a severe lecture for failing to wear his safety harness. His response is to put his arms around her as she cries. Stella shakes herself and goes below, apparently returning to ordinary life at once.
Consequences and significance
Michael’s mother makes the lesson explicit: Stella is never to go on deck without a safety harness clipped on, whatever the weather. Michael’s father is to make one for her. The rule converts the near-disaster into a lasting change in how the family manages risk aboard the boat.
The episode shows both the value and the limits of preparation. Rehearsal enables the family to act quickly, but it cannot make a moving vessel, rough water, and a struggling animal easy to manage; the rescue depends on repeated coordination and a final close approach. It also anticipates the later moment when Michael himself falls into the sea: the earlier rescue establishes the family’s emergency drill and makes the danger of being separated from the Peggy Sue especially clear.
