“continue Josie”

Klara and the Sun

“Continue Josie” is the phrase Klara uses for the hypothetical task of carrying Josie on in another form. In her final conversation with the Manager, she distinguishes the accuracy she might have achieved from the irreducible significance of the person she was asked to learn: what made Josie special resided not inside her as something to copy, but in the hearts of those who loved her.

Meaning and Context

Klara revisits the possibility while reflecting on whether she did all she could for Josie. She tells the Manager that, had it become necessary, she believes she could have continued Josie, but that events turned out better as they did—even though Rick and Josie are no longer together. The Manager asks what she means by the phrase, making explicit the question that Klara’s tentative conclusion raises: whether knowing someone well enough could make it possible to continue them.

Klara explains that she had tried to learn Josie and would have done her utmost if the need had arisen. She does not attribute the likely failure to a lack of effort or accuracy. Instead, she arrives at a boundary between learning a person’s observable particularities and reaching what the people closest to that person feel for them.

The Limits of Accuracy

Klara names The Mother, Rick, Melania Housekeeper, and the Father as people whose feelings for Josie she could not have reached. Her conclusion is not that she would have failed to reproduce details accurately; it is that accuracy would not have provided access to the relationships that give those details their deepest human meaning. The phrase therefore carries both a practical possibility—Klara might have been made to continue Josie—and a limit she recognizes only in retrospect.

That distinction overturns Mr Capaldi’s belief that there was nothing special inside Josie that could not be continued. He had searched for such a quality and told The Mother that he found nothing of the kind. Klara now thinks his search was directed to the wrong place: the specialness was not an identifiable substance within Josie, but something present in those who loved her. On that understanding, continuation could not succeed merely by achieving a faithful likeness.

Retrospective Significance

The phrase also marks Klara’s changed judgment of her own role. She does not claim that she could never have attempted the task; she says she would have done her utmost, while recognizing that the result would not have reached what mattered most. Her gladness that it did not become necessary follows from this distinction. She believes she acted for Josie’s good, yet accepts that care and close observation could not substitute for the loved one’s place in other people’s hearts.

The Manager responds that she is glad Klara feels things worked out for the best and says this is what she hopes to hear from AFs she encounters again: that they have no regrets. When offered the company of other B3s in another part of the Yard, Klara declines. She prefers her chosen spot and says she has memories to go through and place in the right order. The conversation thus leaves “continue Josie” not as a technical achievement, but as a possibility Klara can finally assess through memory, love, and the limits of what she could know.
