Rick’s Decision to Pursue Admission to Atlas Brookings

Klara and the Sun

Rick’s decision to pursue admission to Atlas Brookings is a turning point in which he begins to loosen the belief that his future must be sacrificed to remain beside Josie. Helen sees his reluctance not as a lack of ability but as a fear-driven refusal to try, and asks Klara to help Josie persuade him. Later, Rick tells Klara he has promised his mother to make his best effort and has agreed to meet the man she hopes can help him. The decision is not a guarantee of admission; it is Rick’s first stated commitment to pursue it.

The obstacle Helen identifies

Helen initially considers whether Klara might assist Rick with his studies, provided tutoring does not interfere with her care for Josie. But she clarifies that academic help is not the central problem. In her view, Rick has a real chance if he gives the attempt everything he has; what prevents him from doing so is his conviction that he cannot leave Josie.

Helen explains that Rick imagines Josie as helpless and likely to get into trouble in his absence, although Josie can manage perfectly well. He treats even a short separation as difficult: Helen says he believes he cannot leave Josie alone for more than an hour, despite Atlas Brookings being a day’s drive away. The distance therefore gives concrete form to a deeper bind. Admission would require Rick to accept a life beyond the immediate orbit of Josie and her illness, while his protective attachment makes that possibility feel like abandonment.

Helen’s request to Klara

Helen asks Klara to speak to Josie because she believes Josie is the one person capable of changing Rick’s position. She describes him as stubborn and suspects that he is also afraid of the difficult world beyond home. Helen wants Josie to keep encouraging him, repeatedly if necessary, rather than backing off when he resists.

Klara warns Helen that Josie has already tried to persuade Rick, and that her forcefulness on this very subject may have contributed to the rift between them. Helen recognizes the complication but does not withdraw her request. She worries that, in trying to make peace with Rick, Josie may decide she was wrong to press him and relent. Helen therefore asks Klara to encourage her to persevere even if Rick reacts badly. The request places Klara between Helen’s hopes for Rick and the strain already present in Josie and Rick’s relationship.

Rick changes his position

Later, while Rick and Klara are together near the rail, he reflects on Klara’s earlier remarks. He tells her that he has reconsidered and promised his mother he will try—his very best—to get into Atlas Brookings. His words describe an effort he is now willing to make, not an admission already secured.

The change is significant against Helen’s account of his previous stance. Rick had treated leaving Josie as something he could scarcely contemplate; now he accepts that pursuing college may be compatible with caring for her. Klara has also told him that Helen can find companionship elsewhere, noting how much she laughs and talks with Mrs Arthur. Rick responds uncertainly, but the exchange offers a direct challenge to his assumption that his mother’s wellbeing depends on his constant presence.

The “secret weapon” and the next step

Rick says he has also agreed to meet the man Helen describes as her old flame. Helen regards this person as a “secret weapon” who may be able to pull strings for Rick at Atlas Brookings. Rick’s willingness to meet him is part of the same shift: he is no longer refusing the possibility before testing it, and he is prepared to accept help connected to his mother’s past.

Klara sees the agreement as a way for the wishes expressed in Josie’s kind picture to come closer to reality. Rick, by contrast, wonders whether the adults below are amused by his having come around to his mother’s way of thinking after resisting it for so long. His decision thus remains tentative and surrounded by other people’s hopes, but it changes the immediate direction of the conflict: instead of treating separation as impossible, he agrees to try for a future at Atlas Brookings.
