Street urchin and dog recover under the sun

Klara and the Sun

The recovery of Beggar Man and his dog is a turning point in Klara’s second six-day window display: what appears to be a death in the city’s gray street becomes, by the following morning, a recovery she attributes to the Sun’s special nourishment. Seen from behind the store window, the episode joins vulnerability, companionship, and sunlight in a small but decisive reversal.

The Discovery in the Street

On the fourth day of her window shift, during a gray afternoon when some taxis had switched on their small lights, Klara noticed that Beggar Man was absent from his usual place in a blank doorway between the RPO Building and the Fire Escapes buildings. Because he sometimes wandered off for long periods, she initially gave his absence little thought. Looking across the street again, however, she saw him and his dog pressed against the doorway, lying so close to it that passers-by might have mistaken them for bags left by city workers.

Klara watched through gaps in the passing crowd. Neither Beggar Man nor the dog moved, though occasional pedestrians noticed them and paused before continuing on. As the Sun sank behind the RPO Building, their position had not changed. Klara concluded that they had died, although the people walking past did not seem to know it.

A Death Mistaken for an Ending

The stillness was made more painful by the pair’s posture: Beggar Man and the dog were holding each other, seemingly trying to help one another. Klara felt sadness, while also finding comfort in the thought that they had died together. She wished someone would notice and take them somewhere quieter and better, and considered telling the Manager. At the end of her shift, though, the Manager looked tired and serious, so Klara said nothing.

That choice leaves the apparent death unwitnessed by anyone else in the scene. From the window, Klara remains the only observer who follows their condition over the course of the day; her concern takes the form of watching, imagining a gentler place for them, and weighing whether to alert someone.

Sunlight and Recovery

The next morning brought a complete change in the weather: the grid went up and the day was splendid, with sunlight pouring nourishment into the street and buildings. When Klara looked toward the doorway, she saw that the two had not remained dead. Beggar Man was sitting up with his back against the doorway, one leg stretched out and the other bent beneath his arm. With his free hand he fondled the dog’s neck; the dog, alive again, looked from side to side at the people passing by.

Klara understood their return as the work of a special kind of nourishment from the Sun. Both were absorbing it hungrily and becoming stronger by the minute. Beggar Man was not yet standing, but Klara anticipated that he might be back on his feet, exchanging remarks as usual, before long—perhaps even by that afternoon. The recovery thus unfolds not as an instantaneous return to ordinary life, but as a visible strengthening that Klara watches in the same public place where she had feared they had died.

Meaning in Klara’s Observation

The episode turns on a sharp shift from apparent death to renewed life, and on the contrast between the dim afternoon and the brilliant morning. The two remain physically close in both moments: first lying together against the doorway, then reunited in the Sun, with Beggar Man’s hand at the dog’s neck. Their companionship is not merely an idea Klara supplies afterward; it is visible in the gestures she observes.

The scene also gives concrete form to Klara’s faith in solar nourishment. Her account attributes the pair’s recovery to the Sun’s special help, making their change from stillness to movement a confirmation of the belief through which she understands the world. The city’s passers-by had failed to recognize the apparent death; Klara’s sustained attention, followed by the next morning’s sunlight, makes the recovery legible to her as an extraordinary reprieve.
