A Vatican Intrusion

The Vatican Intrusion
A breach
A skilled intruder enters the Vatican computer network and reaches the restricted files. The investigators name the hacker Vísperas and discover that the target is the Pope’s private terminal.
An appeal
The intruder leaves a message about a threatened church in Seville. Its account of deaths and neglect persuades the Pope to take a personal interest.

Political stakes
Paolo Spada sends Lorenzo Quart to investigate the message while Jerzy Iwaszkiewicz watches for grounds to expand the Holy See’s disciplinary reach. The task is officially informational, but its consequences are political.
A limited mandate
Quart must identify Vísperas, report to Spada, and avoid publicity. He travels with authority to investigate, not permission to intervene freely.
Arrival at the Church

Arrival at the Church
A hostile welcome
Quart finds Nuestra Señora de las Lágrimas amid scaffolding and decay. Gris Marsala explains that the restoration has stalled, while the parish priest Príamo Ferro rejects Quart’s credentials and refuses to cooperate.
Suspicion takes shape
The church’s defenders and opponents already know about the Roman visitor. Quart sees that his supposedly discreet inquiry has become public before he can establish its facts.
A Report without Answers

A Report without Answers
Gathering accounts
Quart interviews Aquilino Corvo, Ferro, Gris, and others, then consults police records. The deaths of Peñuelas and Padre Urbizu are officially accidents, though their timing makes the church’s defenders and critics uneasy.
A widening puzzle
Quart also searches Ferro’s home and finds Óscar Lobato’s computer disks. The clues do not yet identify Vísperas, and the investigator’s formal reports conceal how personally the church is affecting him.
Choosing to Intervene

Choosing to Intervene
The confession
After Honorato Bonafé dies in the church, Ferro disappears and later admits that he killed the journalist. Quart cannot tell whether the confession is true, but helps secure Ferro’s legal representation and delivers him to the police.
A changed role
Rather than leave at once, Quart celebrates the eight o’clock Mass at the threatened parish. His action abandons strict neutrality and gives the congregation a short reprieve.
