Launcelot Leaves Court

A Knight Seeks Adventures
Departure from Camelot
Launcelot rides out with Sir Lionel, but stops to sleep beneath a tree. Lionel leaves him there and is captured by Sir Turquine.
A search begins
Ector follows to find his brother, discovers Lionel’s shield among the prisoners’ shields, and enters the danger himself. Launcelot’s absence soon becomes a problem for the fellowship.
Signs on the Road

The Forest Keeps Evidence
Shields mark the prisoners
Ector sees familiar shields hanging by a ford, learning that many knights have been taken. Their absence suggests that a powerful captor controls the roads.
Launcelot remains missing
Other knights search without knowing whether Launcelot is asleep, captured, or lost. The forest’s signs reveal the danger but cannot yet identify his whereabouts.
Morgan Captures the Sleeper

Enchantment Hides a Knight
Four queens find him
Morgan and three queens recognize Launcelot and argue over his love. Morgan enchants him, then carries him to a castle.
Launcelot refuses coercion
When he awakes, the queens demand that he choose one of them. He refuses, naming them enchantresses and affirming his devotion to Guenever.
Turquine’s Prisoners Are Freed

A Captive Knight Returns
Launcelot finds Turquine
After leaving the enchanted castle, Launcelot follows a damsel to Turquine and defeats him in combat. He kills the captor and frees many imprisoned knights.
The court receives evidence
The rescued knights return to Arthur and recount Launcelot’s deeds. Their testimony restores his public identity and reunites the court around his reputation.
The Mad Knight Is Recognized

A Lost Man Is Found
Elaine discovers him
After Guenever rebukes Launcelot, he becomes mad and wanders. Elaine recognizes him, and the Grail heals him back to his senses.
Companions recover the knight
His return to Arthur’s court is celebrated, but his experience leaves shame and grief behind. The search for him ends in recovery, not in a return to his former innocence.
