A Knight of the Fellowship

A Trusted Companion
An alliance begins
Sir Bors enters the story as part of the overseas fellowship that supports Arthur against the rebel kings. His loyalty is established through action rather than speech.
A reputation grows
In later adventures, Sir Bors appears as a capable knight whose courage is tempered by judgment. His strengths make him valuable in both ordinary warfare and the spiritual quest to come.
The Choice on the Quest

A Conflict of Loyalties
A brother in danger
Sir Bors finds Sir Lionel captured and beaten, while a damsel faces dishonor. He must decide which appeal to answer first.
A difficult choice
Bors rescues the damsel rather than his brother, following the demand to protect the vulnerable. The decision leads to a false report of Lionel’s death and sets brother against brother.
Lionel’s Attack

Brotherhood at Breaking Point
A brother returns
Sir Bors eventually meets Sir Lionel alive, but Lionel believes Bors abandoned him. He draws his sword and tries to kill his brother.
Violence halted
The hermit Sir Colgrevance intervenes and is killed by Lionel. A voice and a miraculous cloud prevent further violence, leaving Bors’ loyalty intact but marked by grief.
The Grail’s Surviving Witness

The Last Knight Returns
A final separation
Sir Bors remains when Sir Galahad and Sir Percivale die after the Grail’s completion. Their deaths leave him as the only one of the three who can return to Arthur’s world.
A bridge between worlds
Bors carries the memory of the quest back to the court. His survival links earthly chivalry to spiritual experience without granting him Galahad’s final transcendence.
Loyalty After the Grail

Service Continues
A defender of the queen
Bors agrees to defend Guenever when she is accused, despite the difficulty of the court’s divisions. His choice reflects a knight who still acts through loyalty and justice.
Witness to collapse
He later follows Sir Launcelot and remains with him through exile and death. Bors survives the Round Table’s destruction and carries its last obligations beyond Britain.
