Dinadan and Breuse Sance Pité

Le Morte d'Arthur

Sir Dinadan and Breuse Sance Pité is a rescue episode in which Dinadan responds to a woman’s appeal for aid, confronts the knight who has killed her brother and detained her, and brings her to a place of safety. Its resolution is practical rather than final: Breuse escapes the encounter, while Dinadan ensures the lady reaches her uncle’s castle before continuing his own adventure.

The Lady’s Appeal

Riding past a well, Sir Dinadan finds a lady in distress. She explains that within the past five days Sir Breuse Sance Pité killed her brother and has since kept her under his control. She says she hates him and asks Dinadan, in the name of knighthood, to avenge her. Her account makes the encounter more than a challenge between armed men: the violence against her brother and her own precarious situation supply the grounds for her request.

Dinadan accepts, invoking the honor owed to women as the reason he will do his part. The episode thus puts a chivalric obligation into action: a plea from a woman in danger is enough to make him face a knight he has not sought out.

The Encounter and Escape

Breuse arrives and, seeing Dinadan with the lady, becomes angry and tells him to keep away. They fight, and each strikes the other hard. Dinadan wounds Breuse in the shoulder, but before Dinadan can turn back, Breuse has fled. The immediate contest therefore ends with Dinadan gaining the advantage, but not with the aggressor captured or brought to account.

Escort and Outcome

The lady asks Dinadan to take her to a castle four miles away. Its lord is her uncle, and she is welcomed there. Having delivered her to this refuge, Dinadan resumes his journey. The rescue achieves a concrete change in her circumstances—she is no longer left with Breuse—but the episode does not say what later becomes of Breuse or whether he faces consequences for killing her brother.
