Merlin’s imprisonment beneath the stone

Le Morte d'Arthur

Merlin’s imprisonment beneath the stone turns his enchantment into a trap: after pursuing Nimue and teaching her the magic she desires, he follows her beneath a great stone and cannot escape the enchantment she works there. The episode converts Merlin’s celebrated command of craft into helplessness, and a later attempt by Sir Bagdemagus to free him confirms that the confinement cannot be undone by strength alone.

From enchantment to entrapment

The episode follows Merlin’s infatuation with Nimue, one of the damsels of the lake brought to court by King Pellinore. He persistently seeks her company, while she treats him well until she has learned the things she wishes to know. Though Merlin has foretold that he will be put alive into the earth, he does not avert that fate. His attachment has already made him vulnerable: he follows Nimue wherever she goes, and she secures his oath that he will never enchant her if he is to have his will.

Nimue eventually shows Merlin a marvel in a rock, beneath a great stone. She works on him subtly until he goes under the stone to show her the marvels there; once he is beneath it, she enchants the place so that he never comes out, despite all his craft. Nimue then leaves him. The reversal is stark: Merlin’s magic has enabled him to teach and impress, but it cannot release him from the confinement Nimue has arranged.

The failed rescue

Merlin’s imprisonment is tested when Sir Bagdemagus passes the rock and hears him making great dole. Bagdemagus tries to help, but the stone is so heavy that a hundred men could not lift it. Merlin tells him to stop: all effort is useless, because only the woman who put him there can help him. The episode thus makes the limit on rescue explicit. Physical strength cannot remove the stone, and Merlin’s own craft cannot reverse Nimue’s work.

Bagdemagus leaves Merlin trapped and continues his adventures. His attempt establishes both the reality of Merlin’s confinement and its permanence within the episode: the cries are heard, help is offered, and yet no release follows. The narrative returns instead to Bagdemagus’s career, later bringing him back to court as a knight of the Round Table.

Narrative significance

The stone fixes in place a reversal of power. Merlin, who had foreseen his fate and possessed extensive enchantments, is reduced to calling from beneath an immovable barrier; Nimue, whom he pursued and instructed, controls whether he can be freed. His earlier prediction that he would be put alive into the earth is fulfilled, while his confidence in craft proves insufficient to change the outcome.

The episode also gives the confinement a boundary: Merlin says that release depends on Nimue, not on the effort of a passing knight or even the accumulated strength of a hundred men. Bagdemagus’s failure makes that condition concrete. The story leaves Merlin beneath the stone, with no rescue or death narrated in this episode.
