Spanish University Students' Union
Los pacientes del doctor GarcíaThe Spanish University Students' Union (SEU), the Falangist student organization, represents the official student presence against which republican student activists organize. The novel gives it significance chiefly through this opposition: as the established body associated with Falangist hegemony, it becomes the institutional target of a revived underground alternative.
Institutional Position
The SEU is described as exercising hegemony in the university sphere under Francoist rule. The contrast is not between two equally situated organizations: the SEU is the dominant Falangist body, while its republican opponent must be reconstructed by former students and operate against the prevailing political order.
The Rival Student Movement
After arriving in Spain in 1941, Marcelo Saporta performs military service and decides to oppose the dictatorship. Back in Madrid, he connects with former students of the French Lycée who have refounded the Republican Federación Universitaria Escolar (FUE) as a movement to challenge the SEU’s dominance. The episode locates the opposition in a specific student network rather than presenting resistance as an abstract conviction: it is built through contacts among young people and directed against the institutional control represented by the SEU.
Political Repression and Consequences
The contrast between the SEU and the clandestine FUE also defines the risks of student opposition. Marcelo sees fellow activists arrested and lost from the movement; during Holy Week in 1947, the arrests of Nicolás Sánchez-Albornoz and Manuel Lamana, sentenced to six and four years in prison, lead him to conclude that testimony from exile may serve the cause better than continued work inside Spain. In 1948 he crosses clandestinely into France with a French-language manuscript about resistance and abandonment. The SEU’s prominence thus belongs to a wider account of how political authority shapes student life: the official organization occupies the recognized position, while its republican challengers face imprisonment and expulsion into exile.
