Wannsee

Los pacientes del doctor García

Wannsee is the lakeside setting of the summer cottage Agneta and Jan Grünwald rent with a police colleague. In the summer of 1948, Agneta goes there wearing every day the handmade bracelet Adrián has given her, making the place part of a growing intimacy she is not yet ready to name.

Summer at the Lake

After Adrián gives Agneta the bracelet for her birthday, she promises to wear it every day. The gift has been made from a broken necklace bought from an old woman selling trinkets outside a metro entrance; Adrián dismantles and remakes it in the workshop where he works in the afternoons. Its linked pieces of golden brass resemble lace, though the materials are humble. At Wannsee, Agneta keeps looking at the bracelet and wearing it through the summer. The lake-side setting thus holds the continuation of an attachment carried in an object she can touch and examine, even as its meaning unsettles her.

A Place of Unanswered Feeling

The narrative locates Wannsee within a longer emotional turn. On the last day but one of May, in Schöneberg, Agneta embraces Adrián, presses her face to his, breathes in his scent, and trembles. For the first time in a long while, she recalls the young woman from the crater on Wilhelmstrasse without shame or resentment and wonders whether she may have mistaken the man. The question frightens her; she resolves to stop herself from pursuing an answer. The summer at Wannsee gives that effort some reprieve, but the bracelet she wears there keeps Adrián present in her daily life.

Return and Disappointment

When the couple return to Berlin, Agneta’s attachment becomes harder to set aside. Adrián misses a Sunday meal because he has work to finish, and her disappointment is strong enough to take away her appetite. Her anxiety grows as his visits become less frequent, marking a shift in his place at the household: he is no longer simply Herr Grünwald’s friend but increasingly Agneta’s. Wannsee remains a brief summer interval between her first acknowledged doubt and the sharper longing that follows their return.
