The Yardstick Arrives A familiar stranger Ever meets Rick Woo when he catches her as she falls outside the airport, and his first kindness is quickly replaced by impatience about her lateness. The abrupt shift unsettles her: he seems both considerate and impossible to approach. Old resentment in person In the van to Chien Tan, Ever recognizes him as the celebrated prodigy her parents used for years as a measure of her own shortcomings. His accomplishments had made him feel less like a person than a standard she could never meet. Learning that Rick chose to come to Taiwan on his own complicates that image. Their first connection is therefore strained by a history he does not know they share, while Ever begins to glimpse a person beyond the family legend.

A Reluctant Rescuer Rules and close calls Rick accompanies Ever, Sophie Ha, and the other students on their first escape from Chien Tan. When Ever loses a shoe crossing the exposed walkway, he steadies her, but she resents what feels like another attempt to supervise her. At Club KISS, his challenges help push Ever into trying snake-blood sake. She surprises herself by enduring it, and Rick responds with respect rather than treating her as a fragile exception. Care without possession After Ever drinks too much, Rick carries her back and makes sure she is safe, while Sophie takes care of her at the club. The next morning, Ever is embarrassed by what he witnessed but also moved by his attention to her dancing and the gentleness of his gestures. Their ease remains tentative. Rick has a girlfriend, and Ever has not yet released her old hostility; nevertheless, being looked after by him begins to replace the caricature of Boy Wonder with a complicated, attentive person.

The False Girlfriend A favor becomes intimate When Rick fears another round of family pressure over Jenna Chu, Ever offers to pose as his girlfriend. She intends the arrangement as practical help, but Rick’s relatives welcome her warmly, and their attention makes the fiction feel more emotionally consequential than either expected. Ever finds herself enjoying Rick’s family and letting them hear about her ambitions to dance. Their approval gives her a glimpse of a home life in which her interests are welcomed, intensifying her attraction to Rick even as she insists the arrangement is pretend. The almost-kiss At Tianmu Park, Ever and Rick spar with staffs, turning their argument and movement into a charged dance. Their bodies draw close enough for a kiss, but Rick stops himself; Ever runs from the moment, conscious of Jenna and of the boundary neither can yet cross. Rick’s later account of the difficult history with Jenna gives the restraint its weight. Their connection is no longer only banter and rescue: each has seen the other’s longing and vulnerability, but neither is free to act on it without consequences.

The Letter and the Return Separation and uncertainty After Ever’s photographs are circulated and Rick and Xavier Yeh fight, Rick leaves for Hong Kong to meet Jenna. Ever hears about the trip secondhand and is left unsure whether Rick’s absence means their almost-kiss was only a passing complication. Rick sends a bo staff through Marc Bell-Leong and promises to explain when he returns. The gift carries their shared language of movement, but its meaning remains uncertain to Ever, who cannot assume kindness is a declaration. A choice made explicit When Rick comes back, he tells Ever that he confronted the history he had concealed and ended his relationship with Jenna. He explains that remaining with her had grown entangled with fear, guilt, and a belief that he alone had to keep her safe. Rick’s return does not erase the pain he and Jenna have experienced, but it changes the terms of his bond with Ever. He admits that she matters to him, while Ever asks for time rather than rushing into another relationship. They choose dance partners as a step toward closeness that respects both of their complicated histories.

A Shared Stage Closeness through collaboration During the Tour Down South, Ever and Rick travel together, trade stories, and build a performance around their staff fighting. Their growing tenderness is visible in small gestures, but they keep their relationship undefined while Ever tries to give Rick room after his breakup. Rick’s letter tells Ever that dancing with her has changed his sense of balance and possibility. Rather than demanding an immediate answer, he promises to wait, letting affection coexist with her need to make her own choices. Mutual support in public When Rick runs to join Ever’s final performance, he keeps a promise made through their shared work. Onstage, the improvised lift transforms a dangerous stumble into a moment of trust, while Ever’s father watches her dance and sees a side of her she had kept hidden. Afterward, Ever draws Rick forward to meet her father, beginning to join the person she loves with the family life she is learning to approach honestly. Their bond resolves not as rescue or obligation, but as an invitation to make choices alongside one another.
