Suit of stones

Loveboat, Taipei

The “suit of stones” is a recurring image for guilt, perceived failure, and the weight of responsibility. When Xavier explains why he concealed Jenna’s self-harm and stayed close to her, he imagines each painful episode adding another stone to an accumulating burden; Ever then sees the image as extending beyond Jenna to Xavier himself.

The Image of Accumulated Failure

Xavier recalls that Jenna was horrified after he received the scars, but had never forgiven herself for what happened. He describes her remorse as adding “another big stone to her suit of failures.” The image turns guilt into something cumulative: a single crisis becomes another weight borne over time, rather than a feeling that passes when the immediate danger is over.

The metaphor also holds together care and injury without making them equivalent. Xavier does not call Jenna intentionally manipulative. He considers whether she may have harmed herself because he was there and she knew he would stop her, but admits he could not risk leaving. His account presents responsibility as something he takes on under uncertainty, not as proof that he can control or resolve her distress.

Silence and Shared Burdens

Xavier says Jenna made him swear not to tell anyone, and that he described his scars as an accident involving a falling knife while they chopped vegetables. His concealment extends even to her parents, despite the seriousness of what he witnessed. The family principle of not taking problems to outsiders helps explain the silence, while also revealing its cost: Xavier is left to carry the secret and the danger largely alone.

After hearing that Jenna’s father would do everything he could to find the best help, Ever recognizes the larger pattern. The narration states that Jenna was not the only one wearing a suit of stones. The image thus shifts from a description of Jenna’s remorse to a recognition of Xavier’s own trapped position: his care for her, his promise, and his silence have become burdens he bears as well.
