Cleveland Public Square

Cleveland Public Square is the downtown meeting point Megan identifies for an urgent trip to a Cleveland audition, making it a practical hinge between Ever’s parade performance and her uncertain pursuit of dance. In the available scenes, it is invoked as a place to travel from rather than described as a setting in its own right.

The Audition Journey

When Ever learns that an arts association has offered her a scholarship opportunity, she explains that she must audition in Cleveland at one thirty, immediately after the parade the following Saturday. The audition is open-ended, leaving the dance style unspecified. Megan proposes that they perform their own routine as a duo, then calculates the logistics: they will need to take an Uber from Cleveland Public Square. Her exasperated reaction turns the square into a concrete starting point for a plan they have little time to prepare.

Dance and Family Expectations

The trip matters because dance is not simply an extracurricular activity for Ever. She and Megan rehearse their routine repeatedly, using videos to refine it, while the anticipated rhythm revives Ever’s sense of physical excitement and possibility. Their parade slot is connected to Ever’s father: his firm has sponsored the parade for ten years, and Ever jokes that he has finally received something in return by securing the opportunity for them to perform.

That public performance and the audition also expose the pressure around Ever’s future. Her parents have already paid a deposit for medical school, a path she says has been set for her since before she could walk. She has downplayed her participation in the parade so her parents will not clamp down further on the time she spends dancing; she is also wary of their reaction to her outfit. Cleveland Public Square therefore stands at the edge of a choice Ever cannot yet face directly: she concentrates on getting the dance right while the possibility of a dance career presses against her family’s expectations.
