Ever's failed trial performance of The Swan Lake at Szeto Ballet Studio

Loveboat, Taipei

Ever’s failure to audition for Swan Lake at Szeto Ballet Studio becomes more than a missed appointment: after Ever rushes to the studio, Madame Szeto expels her, and Ever discovers that Sophie has carried her nude photograph there. The episode links a personal betrayal to the sudden loss of a valued place to dance, leaving Ever to walk back to campus with her audition missed and her future at the studio ended.

The Missed Audition

After a difficult night, Ever wakes close to midday. In the bathroom of Aunty Claire’s home, a frog startles her; she tries to wash away the ache she carries and thinks ahead to facing Sophie, Xavier, and Rick again. The quiet morning turns into a practical disaster when she finds her pointe shoe and realizes that her alarm never rang. The audition she had been preparing for has already passed.

Ever reacts first with alarm at the lost opportunity, then hurries down the curved staircase and toward the studio. She reaches Szeto Ballet Studio with the sun overhead, breathing hard and aware of the pressure of being late. Yet the familiar setting briefly offers refuge: the faded pink walls, cool air, and sound of Swan Lake draw her toward the music. Her rush is not only an attempt to explain her lateness; it is an effort to regain entry to the world of dance before the opportunity closes entirely.

Expulsion from the Studio

That hope collapses when Madame Szeto appears and tells Ever that she is no longer welcome. Ever apologizes and tries to explain that she had hoped to make it, but Madame Szeto holds the door open and orders her to leave, warning that she may call security. Ever backs outside in disbelief, insisting that there must be some mistake. Madame Szeto makes clear that Ever is not to return and extends the ban to Ever’s friend as well.

The authority of the decision is expressed through the doorway: Madame Szeto remains inside and controls whether Ever may enter, while Ever is driven back into the sun. When Madame Szeto throws a wallet-sized photograph toward her, Ever misses it as it falls to the pavement. She then recognizes the image as her nude glamour photograph. The expulsion is therefore not simply a punishment for missing the audition; the photograph has reached the person with power over Ever’s place in the studio.

The Photograph and Sophie’s Betrayal

Ever understands that Sophie must have retrieved the photograph from Yannie’s studio while Ever was asleep and delivered it to Madame Szeto. The source of the studio’s sudden rejection is thus revealed at the point when Ever is already trying to salvage her audition. The picture turns a private image into evidence presented in a professional setting, and Madame Szeto’s response leaves Ever no opportunity to explain before the door is shut in her face.

The ban also implicates a friend: Madame Szeto says that Ever’s friend should not return either. The photograph’s delivery has consequences beyond Ever’s embarrassment or disappointment, placing the strained friendship and Ever’s dance training in the same moment of rupture. Ever is left with the image in her pocket, crumpled and difficult to look at, while the person she suspects of bringing it there is Sophie.

Consequences and Significance

Ever has no cash for the return journey, so she walks the two hours back to campus. She has lost a week’s tuition at Szeto’s, but feels unable to ask for it back. The practical costs accumulate alongside the lost audition: a long walk, money she cannot recover, and exclusion from the studio where she had sought refuge in the sound of Swan Lake.

On the way back, Ever thinks that she needs to speak with Xavier after having fled from him, but cannot tell where their relationship can go from there. Rick also remains unresolved; she can still feel the imprint of his fingers on her chin. These concerns do not undo the immediate consequences at Szeto Ballet Studio, but they place the failed audition within a larger period of rupture. The episode closes not with a performance or explanation, but with Ever carrying the photograph back toward campus and confronting the losses it has set in motion.
