A Family Divided

A Family Divided
The sisters’ last home
In Yoroido, Chiyo and Satsu share a precarious home as their mother’s illness worsens and their elderly father struggles to care for them. Chiyo imagines that Mr. Tanaka may adopt the whole family, but that hope reflects a child’s limited understanding of the choices being made around her.
Different destinations
Mr. Tanaka takes both girls away from their home, but at the Kyoto arrival he separates them: Chiyo is delivered to an okiya, while Satsu is sent elsewhere. Their brief look at one another registers the rupture before either girl can understand what lies ahead.
The separation creates two divergent survival paths. Chiyo enters a disciplined training household; Satsu disappears into a place Chiyo cannot identify, with no reliable means of contacting her.
A Sister in Miyagawa-cho

A Sister in Miyagawa-cho
Searching beyond Gion
After learning that Satsu may be in Miyagawa-cho, Chiyo slips out of the okiya while delivering a shamisen. She follows directions through an unfamiliar district, afraid of being caught but more afraid that her sister will remain lost to her.
Recognition in the doorway
At the Tatsuyo, the keeper initially denies that Satsu is there and warns Chiyo away. A neighboring woman eventually identifies Satsu by her new name, Yukiyo, and Chiyo hears her sister’s voice after months apart.
The reunion confirms the difference between their circumstances: Chiyo is trapped in an okiya’s debt system, while Satsu is being exploited in a brothel. Their affection survives, but neither girl has the power to reunite the family or simply return home.
The Escape Agreement

The Escape Agreement
A plan made in secret
Satsu tells Chiyo that she has been stealing money to pay the woman who controls her and has hidden a train schedule beneath the floor mats. She cannot endure the Tatsuyo, and has decided to run away rather than wait for circumstances to improve.
One chance to meet
Chiyo immediately offers to escape with her. The sisters agree to meet near the Minamiza, across the river, late on Tuesday night, though neither can settle every detail of the plan.
Their agreement briefly restores a shared future: Chiyo can imagine leaving Gion with her sister instead of facing it alone. Yet the plan depends on timing, secrecy, and Chiyo’s ability to get past the restrictions imposed after her earlier misstep.
Two Different Escapes

Two Different Escapes
Chiyo’s failed attempt
Unable to use the locked front door, Chiyo climbs onto the roof and tries to descend into a neighboring courtyard. She falls, breaks her arm, and misses the meeting. Her escape attempt ends with punishment and the loss of her geisha training prospects for the time being.
Satsu leaves alone
Satsu does manage to get away, but Chiyo learns this only after the fact. A letter later reports that Satsu passed through Yoroido and ran away again with the son of Mr. Sugi, leaving no dependable address or route by which Chiyo could follow her.
The sisters’ shared plan therefore becomes a permanent separation. Satsu gains freedom from the brothel, while Chiyo remains in Kyoto, burdened by debt and by the belief that her failure helped make her sister’s escape a solitary one.
The Unanswered Sisterhood

The Unanswered Sisterhood
Hope becomes impractical
Years later, while living and working away from Gion, Chiyo recognizes that Satsu is unlikely to return to Kyoto to find her. Poverty and wartime restrictions make travel difficult, and Satsu never knew the name of the okiya where Chiyo had been sent.
A bond without reunion
Chiyo still imagines that their paths might cross, but the possibility no longer offers a concrete plan. She understands that even a chance meeting might fail to restore what was lost, because years of hardship have changed both sisters and left them without shared news of one another.
The unresolved separation becomes part of Chiyo’s adult life rather than a mystery she can solve. Her memories preserve the sisterhood, but the story offers no reunion to undo the childhood rupture.
