A Career Reopened

Rebuilding a Public Life
Return to work
Sayuri resumes her appearances in Gion after years away, relearning the routines of a geisha in a district transformed by war and occupation. Her return reconnects her with Mameha, Nobu, and the Chairman.
The professional world she reenters is smaller and altered. American officers occupy teahouses, established customs have shifted, and the old hierarchies no longer have quite the authority they once did.
A new opportunity
Nobu asks Sayuri to help entertain Deputy Minister Sato, whose intervention may protect Iwamura Electric from the Occupation authorities. The request gives Sayuri a role in the company’s survival and brings her back into the Chairman’s company.
For Sayuri, the work also revives her hope of being near the Chairman. Her professional return therefore carries a private purpose that she cannot openly name.
The Minister’s Favor

Entertaining for the Company
A difficult guest
Sayuri helps Nobu host Deputy Minister Sato, an awkward and taciturn man whose tastes and habits make him difficult company. Her humor and attentiveness gradually give the gatherings more life, while Nobu remains visibly frustrated by the Minister.
The Chairman, Mameha, and Pumpkin also join some of the parties. Their presence helps Sayuri manage the strain of serving both the company’s interests and the social expectations placed on her.
Business and personal stakes
Sato’s intervention helps reopen Iwamura Electric’s case, and the company secures financing from Mitsubishi Bank. The success improves the company’s prospects and increases Nobu’s confidence about the future.
Sayuri’s role has brought her closer to the Chairman, but the economic arrangements create a new danger: Nobu may now seek a personal commitment from her. The favor that helps his company can also define the course of her private life.
An Unwanted Proposal

The Future Nobu Expects
A plan disclosed
Nobu tells Sayuri that he and the mistress of the Ichiriki discussed whether Deputy Minister Sato could become her danna. The proposal was a way to reward the Minister’s help, though Nobu says he would never have allowed it to happen.
He then reveals that he has waited years to propose himself as Sayuri’s patron. Sayuri understands that the company’s recovery has made Nobu feel able to offer her a future he could not promise before.
Two futures collide
Nobu’s affection and generosity are real, but Sayuri’s deepest longing remains directed toward the Chairman. She cannot accept the expected arrangement without surrendering the hope that has guided her since childhood.
The conflict is not between a good man and a bad one. It is between the debt Sayuri feels she owes Nobu and the life she wants for herself, a life she has never been able to ask for openly.
The Amami Mistake

A Plan Goes Wrong
Sayuri’s attempt to choose
Afraid that becoming Nobu’s mistress will end her hope of a life with the Chairman, Sayuri decides to make Nobu reject her. She asks Pumpkin to bring Nobu to the old theater so he will discover her alone with Deputy Minister Sato.
Sayuri believes she can control the consequence by directing Pumpkin carefully. Instead, Pumpkin brings the Chairman, who sees the encounter and leaves Sayuri facing the collapse of the plan she intended for Nobu.
Betrayal and exposure
Pumpkin explains that she acted out of resentment over Sayuri’s adoption and their broken friendship. She deliberately reverses the favor Sayuri once asked of her, making the scene a private revenge as well as a practical disaster.
Sayuri has exposed her feelings without securing the outcome she wanted. Her attempt to escape one future has damaged trust with Pumpkin and forced the Chairman to confront what he has witnessed.
The Chairman’s Choice

Love and Consequence
The Chairman hears the truth
The Chairman meets Sayuri at the Ichiriki and explains that he arranged Mameha’s support years earlier, after learning of Sayuri’s potential. He had held back his feelings because he knew Nobu cared for her and felt indebted to him.
When Sayuri admits that the Amami encounter was intended to drive Nobu away, the Chairman tells her that Nobu has now rejected the possibility of a future together. He no longer sees Sayuri as a prize he must withhold from his friend.
A life transformed
The Chairman confesses his affection and kisses Sayuri. The moment fulfills the hope that has shaped her ambitions since childhood, but it also confirms that her choices have damaged relationships she valued.
The Chairman becomes her danna, and Sayuri leaves her career in Gion while continuing to live at Nitta Okiya under a financial arrangement. Later, she moves to New York, establishes a small teahouse, and builds a life beyond the district that formed her.
