The Adoption Delusion

The Adoption Delusion
Hope built on an offer
Mr. Tanaka’s kindness to Chiyo and his invitation to visit his household lead her to imagine that he will adopt both sisters. She reads the adults’ serious conversations through a child’s hopes, expecting rescue from her mother’s illness and the uncertain future of her family.
The hidden decision
At the train station, Mr. Tanaka turns the girls over to Mr. Bekku rather than taking them to his home. Chiyo’s expectation of adoption gives way to bewilderment, but the adults provide no explanation that could help either child understand where she is being sent.
Separation at the Door

Separation at the Door
A divided destination
After the long journey, Mr. Bekku takes Chiyo into an okiya while Satsu is ordered to remain in the rickshaw. The sisters understand in a brief exchanged look that they are being separated, but neither has the power to challenge the people controlling their movements.
Two kinds of confinement
Chiyo is left in a house where she must obey unfamiliar adults and earn her keep through labor. Satsu is sent elsewhere, and Chiyo has no reliable way to learn her destination or contact her; the separation turns family attachment into a source of anguish rather than protection.
A Dangerous Reunion

A Dangerous Reunion
Finding Satsu
During a rare opportunity to leave the okiya, Chiyo reaches Tatsuyo in the Miyagawa-cho district and discovers that Satsu is being forced to work as a prostitute. The meeting restores the sisters’ bond but also reveals that escape will require money, secrecy, and precise timing.
A plan with little margin
Satsu says she has saved enough to pay her way out and names a night for them to flee together. Chiyo agrees to meet her near the Minamiza Theater, but the sisters have no secure refuge, and Chiyo must return to an okiya whose rules and surveillance limit her freedom.
The Rooftop Fall

The Rooftop Fall
A route improvised under pressure
After the front door is locked, Chiyo uses a rooftop route to try to reach the street and keep her rendezvous with Satsu. She gets across the okiya roof but loses her grip while descending, falls into a neighboring courtyard, and breaks her arm.
Escape becomes punishment
Auntie retrieves Chiyo and beats her, while Granny punishes Pumpkin for failing to keep watch. Chiyo’s injury and the missed meeting end her immediate chance to escape; Mother of Nitta Okiya adds medical costs to her debt and concludes that investing in her training is too risky.
A Sister Lost

A Sister Lost
News without reunion
Mother of Nitta Okiya tells Chiyo that Satsu has escaped with the son of the Sugi family. The news confirms that one sister got away, but Chiyo cannot follow, and her broken arm and debts leave her more dependent on the household than before.
The cost of failure
Chiyo spends the following months as a maid, isolated from training and uncertain whether her parents are alive. A letter from Mr. Tanaka later confirms that both parents have died and that Satsu has disappeared again, closing the prospect of family rescue that had sustained Chiyo’s escape plans.
