The Chairman arranges Mameha’s tutelage of Sayuri
Memoirs of a GeishaThe Chairman arranges Mameha’s tutelage of Sayuri by asking Mameha to look after a girl he had met years earlier and offering to cover her expenses. The intervention, disclosed only much later, transforms Sayuri’s understanding of her apprenticeship: the mentor she had regarded as acting from her own purposes had also been carrying out the Chairman’s request, while he had deliberately kept his role hidden because of Nobu.
The Arrangement and Its Delayed Disclosure
Years after Mameha became Sayuri’s older sister, the Chairman asks whether Sayuri ever wondered why Mameha had taken her under her care. Sayuri does not understand what he means. He then explains that he had told Mameha about a beautiful young girl with startling gray eyes whom he had met, and asked her to help the girl if she encountered her in Gion. He also offered to pay Mameha’s expenses if necessary. Mameha did encounter Sayuri a few months later and took her under her care.
The disclosure arrives not as a public account of the arrangement but in a private conversation between the Chairman and Sayuri. Its lateness matters: Sayuri had spent years interpreting Mameha’s actions without knowing that the Chairman had set this chain of events in motion. He confirms that he had also insisted Mameha not tell Sayuri, and begins to explain that his concealment had to do with Nobu.
A Path Dependent on Mameha
The Chairman says that, according to Mameha, Sayuri would never have become a geisha without her help. His statement gives the arrangement concrete stakes: it was not simply a gesture of support but an intervention in the course that made Sayuri’s career possible. The Chairman could offer financial backing, but it was Mameha who encountered Sayuri in Gion and provided the care and guidance through which that possibility took shape.
Sayuri had assumed Mameha’s mission was personal: she believed Mameha had acted to rid herself and Gion of Hatsumomo. The Chairman’s explanation does not erase Mameha’s role; it changes the known circumstances behind it. Mameha remains the person who trained and supported Sayuri, but her tutelage now also appears within a history of assistance initiated by the Chairman and kept from its beneficiary.
Sayuri’s Recognition and the Concealed Bond
The revelation changes how Sayuri sees both Mameha and herself. She realizes that she will have to reconsider Mameha’s past remarks in light of the undisclosed motive. She also experiences her own identity differently, seeing her hands as hands the Chairman had made. Exhilaration, fear, and gratitude arrive together; before she can bow to thank him, she tells him she wishes he could have told her years earlier how much the knowledge would have meant.
The arrangement therefore makes the Chairman’s earlier intervention newly present in Sayuri’s adult life: the history of her training now carries a personal connection she had not recognized. Yet the withheld truth is not resolved by the disclosure. The Chairman says there was a reason he could not tell her, or allow Mameha to do so, and identifies Nobu as central to that reason. The scene ends with the secret opened but its full explanation still pending, turning an account of mentorship into a revelation about the relationships and concealments surrounding Sayuri’s past.
