Vallabhbhai Patel Stadium is the wrestling venue where Saleem accompanies his uncle Hanif to watch a match. The visit turns a crowded public spectacle into an intimate test of concealment: through his newly awakened telepathy, Saleem feels Hanif’s grief about his failing film career and must pretend not to know it.

Setting and the wrestling match

On the way to the stadium, Hanif and Saleem move with the crowds past giant cardboard cut-outs of Dara Singh and Tagra Baba. Inside, they have excellent seats beneath the floodlights, which fall across the backs of the wrestlers locked together in the ring. The match offers the outward shape of an ordinary outing between an uncle and his nephew, complete with food and shouted encouragement.

Hanif’s hidden grief

The visit is complicated by Saleem’s access to Hanif’s thoughts. Beneath Hanif’s booming laughter, Saleem senses sadness about his favorite uncle’s career: film after film has failed, and Hanif fears that he may never get another film. The contrast between the public cheer of the stadium and Hanif’s private disappointment makes the venue a place where the spectacle cannot conceal what Saleem inwardly perceives.

Saleem’s concealment

Although he feels Hanif’s grief, Saleem tries not to let it show. Hanif notices his downcast expression and asks what is wrong, offering channa and pakoras; Saleem denies that anything is the matter and addresses him as Hanif mamu. Once reassured, Hanif turns back to the match, cheering Dara Singh and urging him to give his opponent hell. Saleem’s silence preserves the outing’s easy surface, even as the uncle’s sadness remains present to him.

Narrative significance

The stadium scene shows the double burden of Saleem’s telepathy: it brings him close to another person’s concealed feelings, while making ordinary companionship dependent on hiding what he knows. The wrestling match supplies a shared public focus, but the scene’s emotional center is the difference between Hanif’s audible laughter and the grief Saleem privately senses beneath it.
