Malthus

Miss Peregrine's Home of Peculiar Children

Malthus is the monstrous ally Dr. Golan summons during his attempt to recruit Jacob, making the proposed bargain concrete: Jacob would gain a way out of his impossible choices, but only by cooperating with a man whose creature threatens his friends.

Appearance and Introduction

Golan calls Malthus to come forward, and a shadow appears in the doorway. The creature’s arrival is registered first through its noxious stench: Bronwyn gags and steps back, while Emma clenches her fists as if ready to charge. Its presence turns Golan’s offer from a persuasive promise into an immediate physical menace.

Alliance with Golan

Golan identifies Malthus as his partner and proposes that Jacob help them find more people like himself. In return, he promises Jacob safety from Malthus and his kind, the chance to live at home, paid work as Golan’s research assistant, and travel with him. The terms reveal the coercive structure of the offer: Golan presents protection from Malthus as a benefit even while Malthus stands in the doorway, close enough to frighten Jacob’s companions.

Conflict and Narrative Role

When Jacob asks what would happen to his friends if he accepted, Golan dismisses them as having made their choice and insists that a grand plan is already in motion. Malthus’s visible presence gives weight to that refusal to protect the group. For a moment, Jacob considers the offer because it appears to supply a third option between remaining in the loop and leaving it to die; seeing his friends’ worried faces ends the temptation. Malthus thus functions as both the threat underlying Golan’s bargain and the test that makes Jacob’s loyalty to his friends decisive.
