Ymbryne Council

Miss Peregrine's Home of Peculiar Children

The Ymbryne Council is the governing body of the ymbrynes, the women charged with protecting young peculiars and keeping their time loops stable. Its authority appears both in the education of future guardians and in its attempt to restrain a renegade faction whose experiment with time ends in catastrophe.

Leadership and Education

The Council’s most prominent leader is Miss Avocet, whom Miss Peregrine describes as close to royalty among peculiars. For fifty years, the community tried to elect Miss Avocet leader of the Council, but she declined, choosing instead to continue teaching at the academy she founded with Miss Bunting. Her influence is reflected in the claim that every ymbryne worthy of the name had studied under her, including Miss Peregrine, who was among her youngest pupils.

The academy also shaped Miss Peregrine’s brothers, who accompanied her there. They were not ymbrynes: Miss Peregrine explains that only women are born to that role. Her account connects the Council’s authority to a specifically female vocation, while suggesting that access to ymbryne learning could give men knowledge of its distinctive arts without granting them the guardians’ position.

Duties and the Maintenance of Loops

The ymbrynes’ work, as Miss Peregrine describes it, is practical and continuous. They search the countryside for young peculiars in need, avoid those who might harm them, and ensure their wards are fed, clothed, concealed, and taught the lore of their people. Alongside this guardianship, they must make sure their time loops reset each day.

Loop maintenance depends on keeping the entrance usable: an ymbryne must cross through it from time to time. Miss Peregrine compares the ingress point to a hole in fresh dough that may close if it is not periodically opened. Entry and exit also serve as a valve for the pressures accumulating in a closed temporal system; without that passage, she warns, the loop becomes unstable. The Council’s protective remit therefore extends beyond the children living within loops to the regular maintenance of the loops themselves.

The Renegade Faction and the Siberian Experiment

Around the turn of the twentieth century, a splinter faction of disaffected peculiars sought to pervert time loops into a means of immortality: not merely suspending aging, but reversing it. Its members imagined eternal youth outside loops and unrestricted movement between past and future, escaping the effects that normally limit such travel. Miss Peregrine dismisses the scheme as impossible and dangerous, and says her brothers asked her to help make it real. She refused, warning them against trying to make themselves gods.

The Council opposed the project with warnings and even threats, but could not stop it. In the summer of 1908, Miss Peregrine’s brothers and several hundred members of the faction travelled to the Siberian tundra to conduct the experiment in an old, nameless loop unused for centuries. The rebels included several powerful ymbrynes, whom Miss Peregrine calls traitors. The episode shows a severe limit to the Council’s authority: its members could condemn the undertaking, yet influential guardians joined it and the expedition proceeded.

Catastrophe and Significance

The Council expected the expedition to fail and its participants to return humbled by the limits of nature. Instead, an explosion shook windows as far away as the Azores. Miss Peregrine says the blast was so immense that anyone within five hundred kilometres would have thought the world was ending; the Council assumed everyone involved had died.

The experiment’s scale and outcome make the Council’s responsibilities more than administrative. Its work of care and daily upkeep exists alongside the need to contain knowledge that can be turned against the order of time. Yet the Council’s warnings prove insufficient when ambition draws its own members into rebellion. The contrast between maintaining loops through routine passage and attempting to master time through a single forbidden experiment defines the stakes surrounding the organization.
