Metropolitan Xiucutil release

Naked Lunch

The Metropolitan Xiucutil release is an attack on the opening night of the New York Metropolitan, in which A. J. unleashes a swarm of Xiucutils from behind the protection of bug repellent. The insects’ reputed effects transform a formal cultural gathering into a chaotic spectacle, making the episode one of A. J.’s most extreme public disruptions.

Background and the Xiucutil

Before the incident, the narrator hears about the Xiucutil from a German prospector dying of uremia in Pasto, Colombia. The insect is said to resemble a large grasshopper and to have such powerful aphrodisiac effects that a person stung by one may die if unable to find a woman immediately. The prospector claims to have seen Indigenous people trying to remove the insects from themselves. The narrator never manages to obtain a Xiucutil, leaving the creature’s reputation in the realm of reported knowledge until A. J. makes it the instrument of a public prank.

The Opening-Night Attack

On opening night at the New York Metropolitan, A. J. releases a swarm of Xiucutils while wearing insect repellent. His protection creates a pointed imbalance: he can initiate the danger while avoiding its effects himself. The episode offers no account of his motive beyond the action itself, but its timing and scale make the disruption unmistakably theatrical, aimed at an audience gathered for a prestigious occasion.

Panic and Public Spectacle

The insects provoke a rapidly escalating disturbance. Mrs. Vanderbligh is seen swatting at a Xiucutil; screams and the sounds of breaking glass and torn clothing follow. The account culminates in a crowd of people in evening clothes becoming a mass of naked bodies on the floor. The scene’s reversal is social as well as physical: the ceremony’s cultivated decorum gives way to collective disorder, and the audience becomes the spectacle.

A. J.’s Pattern of Disruption

The release belongs to a wider pattern of A. J.’s elaborate pranks, which frequently make public settings the stage for abrupt disorder. Here, the insect’s extraordinary reputation supplies the mechanism, while A. J.’s repellent allows him to stand apart from the consequences he imposes on others. By turning hearsay into a mass event, the episode also links the book’s uncertain, reported knowledge to its unruly public scenes.
