Mugwumps

Naked Lunch

Mugwumps are long-lived, nonhuman inhabitants of the Meet Cafe whose dependence on sweets and secretion of an addictive longevity fluid make them both objects of desire and the center of a market of dependency. Their scenes move between the ordinary commerce of Interzone and grotesque spectacles of bodily domination, while the Reptiles who consume their fluid reveal the creature’s influence extending beyond its own body.

Identity and Physical Characteristics

At the Meet Cafe, Mugwumps sit on white-satin stools, drinking colored syrups through alabaster straws. They have no liver and nourish themselves exclusively on sweets. Their thin purple-blue lips cover a sharp beak of black bone, which they use in fights over clients. The creatures therefore appear at once carefully adorned and physically dangerous: a refined cafe setting surrounds bodies equipped for violence.

Mugwumps secrete an addictive fluid that slows metabolism and prolongs life. The text makes the connection between longevity and dependency explicit: longevity agents are addictive in proportion to their effectiveness. Their bodily substance is consequently more than a commodity. It extends life while binding its consumers to a repeated need, turning the promise of survival into a means of dependence.

The Reptiles and the Fluid Economy

Those addicted to Mugwump fluid are called Reptiles. They are described as having flexible bones and black-pink flesh, and some hang over chairs. A fan of green cartilage grows behind each ear, covered with hollow, erectile hairs through which they absorb the fluid. The fans also serve as a form of communication known only to Reptiles; they move as if touched by invisible currents. Dependence thus produces not only a physical adaptation but a distinct, partly inaccessible means of social exchange.

The fluid’s market appears through service and waiting as well as through supply. The Sailor spots his Reptile, drifts over, and orders green syrup, then waits an hour before the creature recognizes his presence. He asks about eggs for Fats, and the Reptile takes another two hours to raise three pink, transparent fingers. The long pauses make the exchange conspicuously slow: the Reptile is not simply a responsive vendor but a body whose attention and gestures arrive on a different temporal scale.

Refuge During the Panics

The Mugwumps’ most collective response comes during the biennial Panics, when the Dream Police storm the City. The creatures retreat into the deepest cracks in the wall, seal themselves inside clay cubicles, and remain in biostasis for weeks. Meanwhile the Reptiles dart about at mounting speed, screaming past one another. The contrast is sharp: the Mugwumps survive the crisis by withdrawing and suspending activity, while their dependents become increasingly agitated.

The episode ends with the Dream Police disintegrating into globs of rotten ectoplasm, which an old junky sweeps away while coughing and spitting in the morning. The Mugwump Man then arrives with alabaster jars of fluid, and the Reptiles are smoothed out. Their distress gives way to stillness, and the air becomes clear again. The sequence ties the creatures’ commerce to the City’s recurring political panic: public disorder passes, but the Mugwump fluid returns as a means of restoring the Reptiles to calm.

The Rumpus Room and Bodily Power

A separate appearance in Hassan’s Rumpus Room presents a Near East Mugwump amid gilt decoration, red plush, and guests in evening dress. The creature sits naked on a pink-silk bar stool, while those present drink through alabaster tubes. It licks honey from a crystal goblet and is described as having the same blank, insect-like calm and exclusive diet of sweets associated with Mugwumps elsewhere. The setting places the creature within an elite, carefully staged social gathering rather than the cafe’s crowded trade.

The Mugwump orders a slender blond youth to stand and turn around through telepathic pictographs, then ties the youth’s hands behind his back with a red silk cord. The scene proceeds to the youth’s death at the Mugwump’s hands, witnessed by the guests. The text then presents the body’s return to the Mugwump in a distorted sequence, ending with the creature falling away, apparently sated. This episode makes the Mugwump’s power over another person explicit, but it does not resolve that violence into a stable relationship or a lasting consequence beyond the immediate scene.

Narrative Function

Across these appearances, Mugwumps occupy several connected roles: they are creatures with a distinctive bodily economy, sources of a life-prolonging addictive substance, and figures of coercive power. Their relation to the Reptiles is especially consequential because the fluid passes from one body to another and reorganizes the consumer’s body, time, and behavior. The long delay in the Sailor’s exchange and the Reptiles’ calming after the Panics make dependency visible not as a single transaction but as a condition extending through everyday life and crisis.

The scenes also place sharply different modes of control beside one another. The Mugwumps’ secretion induces dependence through bodily need; elsewhere, a technical warning describes biocontrol as a means of directing movement, mental processes, emotions, and apparent sensations through signals imposed on the nervous system. The text does not equate these systems, but their juxtaposition broadens the motif of control beyond the Mugwumps themselves. The creatures’ significance lies in that double image: their fluid offers prolonged life, while the desire for it makes the recipient less free.
