On the Come Up

Hype is a radio host whose public platform both amplifies Brianna’s rise and exposes the pressure to interpret her through familiar stereotypes. His warm introduction at Hot 105 gives way to a confrontational interview about “On the Come Up,” while his later appearance at The Ring frames Brianna’s return to performance as a homecoming and a chance to speak for herself.

Radio Host and Public Platform

On Hot 105, Hype presents himself as an enthusiastic supporter of Brianna’s talent. Before her interview, he tells listeners that one of his favorite rappers is her father, Lawless, and welcomes Brianna as Law’s daughter and the artist behind one of the moment’s hottest songs. He also praises her Ring battle, recommends that listeners watch it online, and notes that “On the Come Up” is requested on his show by both young listeners and older fans.

That endorsement gives Brianna valuable visibility, but it also makes Hype a gatekeeper of the public conversation around her. He advertises the interview as a discussion of the song’s controversy and her next moves, linking her artistic breakthrough to a petition seeking to remove the track from Dat Cloud and claims that it contributed to violence at a local school.

The Interview and Its Conflict

When Hype asks Brianna to respond to the criticism, she answers bluntly that she is angry and rejects the accusations. She objects that news coverage and the petition have made her the villain without asking why students protested in the first place. Hype interrupts her explanation and turns attention to lyrics that he says sound excessively aggressive, including lines that he interprets as suggesting violence against police.

The disagreement reveals the limits of Hype’s earlier praise. He can celebrate Brianna’s battle and promote her song while also approaching her work through the controversy’s most sensational claims. Brianna refuses to accept his framing as a neutral reading: she denies that the lyric means what he implies and insists that the song’s words did not force anyone to act. The live exchange makes the interview itself part of the dispute over who gets to define her music and what it says about her.

Connection to Brianna’s Career

Hype’s role extends beyond the interview. When Brianna returns to The Ring to perform, he tells the crowd that she began there and has been “on the come up” ever since. The introduction ties her new public profile back to the local venue where her career first attracted attention, turning the Ring into a point of continuity amid the arguments over her image and music.

Brianna’s performance then sharply contrasts with the marketable persona others have urged her to adopt. In her freestyle, she rejects being a laugh, a pet, a puppet, or a clone; distinguishes speaking about what she sees from claiming those conditions as her identity; and declares that she is not for sale. Hype introduces the moment, but the words that define its meaning are Brianna’s own.

Narrative Role

Hype’s interactions with Brianna move between recognition and constraint. His praise helps present her as a significant young artist, yet his interview reproduces the public tendency to read her lyrics as evidence of dangerous intent rather than as commentary on what she sees. The contrast between the Hot 105 exchange and the Ring performance makes his platform part of the novel’s larger tension between imposed image and self-definition: visibility can open a door, but it does not guarantee that the person being seen controls the story told about her.
