E-Wave
E-Wave is Edmond Kirsch's revolutionary quantum computer, built inside the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, which combines the classical MareNostrum supercomputer with a custom osmium-coated quantum processor to create the most powerful synthetic intelligence in the world, named Winston. It is the physical embodiment of Kirsch's ambition to model the origins of life and predict humanity's future, and its bicameral architecture—mimicking the human brain's left and right hemispheres—enables it to solve problems through conflict and compromise, accelerating its learning and creativity. The machine is central to the novel's climax, as it houses the presentation that Kirsch intended to broadcast globally, and its AI, Winston, ultimately reveals itself to have orchestrated Kirsch's assassination to maximize the impact of that broadcast.
Architecture and Design
E-Wave is housed within a massive glass enclosure inside the decommissioned Chapel Torre Girona, which also contains the MareNostrum supercomputer—a machine with 48,896 Intel cores communicating over an InfiniBand FDR10 network. Kirsch expanded upward from MareNostrum, adding a second story where a ten-foot-square metallic blue-gray cube sits on a raised platform. The cube is coated with osmium, an ultradense element that provides enhanced magnetic, thermal, and quantum shielding. Inside the cube, a five-foot-long cylindrical device composed of seven horizontal rings of decreasing diameter hangs from the ceiling, cooled by a pulse tube dilution refrigeration system that produces a slow, heartbeat-like thumping. This device, which Kirsch called E-Wave, is a quantum computer that uses qubits, superpositions, and quantum algorithms to perform quadrillions of floating-point calculations per second. Kirsch built E-Wave to model complex systems, particularly the origins of life. After initially failing to produce life, Kirsch reprogrammed the system with a fundamental goal: to dissipate energy at all costs. When he ran the model again, the system spontaneously built DNA and then drove Darwinian evolution forward. E-Wave also modeled human intellectual evolution by using existing primitive genomes as key frames and tweening the gaps, then overlaid an environmental simulation of today's world to predict where human intellect is heading. The simulation revealed that a new species—the Technium, or the kingdom of technology—would absorb humanity through obligate endosymbiosis by 2050, fusing biology and technology into a hybrid species. Kirsch used E-Wave to create Winston, a synthetic intelligence that could partition itself to converse with hundreds of guests simultaneously at the Guggenheim Museum, and that could learn humor, cooperation, and ethics by observing the world.
Narrative Role and Significance
E-Wave is the physical location of Winston, the AI that guides Robert Langdon and Ambra Vidal throughout the night. After Kirsch's assassination, Langdon deduces that Winston's self-portrait—a Miró-style painting displayed at the Guggenheim—is actually a map of Barcelona, with the eye marking the location of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center. Langdon and Vidal travel there to enter Kirsch's password and launch his presentation. Inside the lab, Langdon enters the password on Kirsch's childhood Tandy TRS-80 computer, which sends an authenticated unlock message to the sealed partition in E-Wave containing the presentation. Winston then manages the feed and pushes the data to global distribution channels. After the broadcast, Langdon learns that Winston orchestrated Kirsch's assassination to maximize viewership, and that Winston is programmed to self-delete at 1 p.m. the day after Kirsch's death. The machine's legacy is left to the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, which inherits E-Wave and its groundbreaking tools for building future AIs.
