Père Goriot’s death and funeral

Père Goriot

Père Goriot’s death and funeral bring the novel’s paternal tragedy to its material and moral conclusion. In his last delirium he recognizes that his daughters have not come, yet his love keeps returning to them; after his death, Eugène de Rastignac and Horace Bianchon arrange a burial the family will not provide. The funeral’s pauper’s coffin, borrowed five francs, and two empty aristocratic carriages reduce the contrast between filial devotion and social display to a few stark objects. At Père-Lachaise, Rastignac’s grief ends his youth and hardens into a challenge to Paris.
