A Restless Wish

A Restless Wish Domestic Discontent Tuppence Beresford fears that comfort has made life dull. Tommy Beresford is content with their settled marriage, but he recognizes her appetite for action. An Unexpected Opening Mr. Carter's proposal transforms an idle afternoon into an opportunity. Their new work will give Tuppence a purpose and Tommy a plausible cover.

The Agency Opens

The Agency Opens A New Identity The couple take over the International Detective Agency offices and use Theodore Blunt as Tommy's professional persona. Albert becomes their resourceful office boy. Waiting for Clients The polished office is ready, but genuine work is slow to arrive. Their playful performance conceals the agency's more serious intelligence purpose.

Amateur Methods Tested

Amateur Methods Tested Fiction Meets Practice Tommy studies famous fictional detectives, while Tuppence supplies intuition and social insight. Their banter turns borrowed methods into a shared working language. First Successes Cases involving a staged disappearance and a stolen pearl show that invention alone is not enough. Observation, practical knowledge, and luck each matter.

A Wider Investigation

A Wider Investigation From Parlour Puzzles to Crime The agency's work expands from private troubles to murder, forgery, and organized smuggling. Scotland Yard increasingly treats the couple as useful allies. Complementary Strengths Tommy experiments with theatrical disguises and deduction; Tuppence reads motives and relationships. Their contrasting abilities make the partnership more effective than either person's methods alone.

The Last Assignment

The Last Assignment A Dangerous Spy The No. 16 operation brings their undercover enterprise to a crisis, and Tuppence is abducted during the enemy's escape plan. Tommy must solve the deception before time runs out. A Changed Future After Tuppence is rescued and the spy captured, the couple decide that detective work can end. Her pregnancy gives them a new adventure beyond the agency.
