Gabriel Stavansson

Partners in Crime

Gabriel Stavansson is a celebrated explorer whose return to England after an Arctic expedition brings him to the International Detective Agency with an urgent personal matter. In his first encounter with Tommy Beresford, he identifies himself as a man recently returned from the North Pole and reveals that he had become engaged before leaving on an expedition two years earlier.

Identity and Introduction

Stavansson arrives without a visiting card, giving his name to Albert, who is attempting to delay him by saying that Mr. Blunt is busy on the telephone with Scotland Yard. Stavansson calmly says he will wait. His striking presence is described through his height, weather-beaten, bronzed face, and unusually blue eyes, which contrast sharply with his brown skin.

Tommy chooses to receive him while ostensibly on his way to the Duke’s. He tells Stavansson that he can spare a few minutes, then brings him into the inner office, where Tuppence is sitting with a pad and pencil as Tommy’s confidential secretary, Miss Robinson. Tommy’s deductions—that the visitor has arrived by taxi and has recently been in the Arctic or Antarctic—astonish Stavansson, who remarks that he had thought such feats belonged only in books.

Expedition and Return

Stavansson explains that he landed in England three days before the meeting. A friend cruising in northern waters brought him back by yacht; otherwise, he says, he would not have returned for another fortnight. The compressed account makes his early return part of the urgency surrounding his visit: he has come to seek help before the expedition’s expected schedule would have brought him home.

Tommy recognizes him as the well-known explorer who has recently returned from the region of the North Pole. When Stavansson begins to explain why he has come, Tommy interrupts to identify the woman in his story as Mrs. Leigh Gordon before she married. The exchange establishes that Stavansson’s adventure in the polar regions is bound to a personal history extending back to before his departure.

Engagement and Narrative Role

Before setting out on his last expedition two years earlier, Stavansson had the good fortune, as he puts it, to become engaged to Mrs. Maurice Leigh Gordon. His disclosure places a two-year absence between the engagement and his return, giving the personal matter he brings to the agency its essential context. The evidence introduces the engagement but does not yet establish what has happened to his fiancée or how the relationship will conclude.

Stavansson’s entrance also gives Tommy an occasion to perform detective work before the client has stated his name or business. The contrast between the explorer’s amazement and Tommy’s matter-of-fact explanation makes the office itself a stage for the detective’s practiced deductions. Stavansson’s role at this point is therefore twofold: he arrives as an impressive figure from a distant expedition, and his engagement supplies the personal problem that turns the encounter toward the case.
