A Useful Partnership

Partnership on Unequal Terms
The research arrangement
The Other meets Piranesi twice a week and asks him to gather observations for a search for Great and Secret Knowledge. Piranesi sees a colleague; the Other benefits from Piranesi’s exceptional knowledge of the labyrinth.
A hidden imbalance
The Other supplies occasional necessities but does not share Piranesi’s reverence for the House. Their relationship appears cooperative while depending on information and power Piranesi does not know he is surrendering.
Testing the Gaps

Testing What Remains
The false word
The Other uses “Batter-Sea” to determine whether Piranesi remembers the world outside. Piranesi misses the test because the word has been severed from its original context.
A concealed advantage
The Other knows more than he admits about Piranesi’s lost past. His calm questioning converts Piranesi’s trust into an instrument for monitoring whether that past is returning.
An Enemy Invented

A Threat Reframed
The warning about 16
The Other tells Piranesi that 16 is malicious and will drive him mad. He insists that Piranesi hide and avoid any contact, presenting isolation as protection.
Control through fear
The warning discourages Piranesi from hearing another account of his own past. The Other’s fabricated narrative makes Piranesi fear the person most likely to help him understand his situation.
The Flood Trap

Violence at the Flood
A plan for escape
The Other arrives with a gun and an inflatable boat, intending to survive the flood and confront 16. He expects Piranesi to assist and treats the danger as a tool for eliminating his supposed enemy.
The recovered past
Piranesi repeats details of his first meeting with the Other in the outside world. The Other recognizes that his victim remembers and tries to seize him before 16 arrives.
Swept Away

The Other’s Death
A failed escape
The Other pursues the drifting boat instead of climbing to safety. The tides overwhelm his movements while Piranesi and 16 take refuge on the Horned Giant’s statue.
Consequences without revenge
A wave throws the Other against the wall, killing him. Piranesi later treats his remains with care, showing that the end of their conflict does not extinguish his regard for the dead.
