A Missing Academic

A Disappearance to Investigate
A cold trail
Matthew Rose Sorensen vanishes after visiting Valentine Ketterley. The circumstances remain obscure, and the people connected to the earlier disappearances around Laurence Arne-Sayles offer no easy explanation.
A later lead
Years afterward, Angharad Scott’s concern brings the missing-person case to Sarah Raphael and her colleagues. The connection to Arne-Sayles gives Raphael reason to look beyond a routine disappearance.
The Dangerous Instructions

Following a Dangerous Lead
Arne-Sayles’s account
Raphael questions Laurence Arne-Sayles, who describes a path into another world and provides instructions for reaching it. He offers information freely, but his pleasure in manipulation makes his testimony suspect.
A deliberate choice
Raphael follows the instructions to understand what happened to Matthew. Her decision is an act of professional inquiry and personal courage, not a promise that she will accept Arne-Sayles’s explanation.
A Trail Through Halls

Marking the Way
A careful advance
Inside the House, Raphael uses chalk to mark her route back toward the First Vestibule. The labyrinth is vast, and she cannot rely on intuition alone to prevent herself from becoming lost.
A written appeal
She leaves directions and messages in the halls, trying to find Matthew without trusting the Other. Her persistence creates a path of contact even while Piranesi, frightened by warnings, avoids her.
The Flood Rescue

Finding Matthew
A perilous meeting
Raphael reaches the First Western Hall as the tides rise. The Other uses Matthew as bait, but Piranesi breaks away and warns her of the approaching flood.
Survival together
They climb onto the statues and shelter from the violent water. Raphael is injured neither by the gunfire nor by the flood, and the crisis establishes a trust that the Other’s lies had prevented.
A Patient Invitation

Trust Without Coercion
Meeting the person who remains
Raphael tells Piranesi that Matthew’s family has been searching for him, but does not force him to accept that identity. She lets him decide whether to visit them or remain in the House.
A continuing bond
Piranesi chooses to leave after considering the dead and the House. Raphael’s return visits and later journeys show their connection continuing without the control that defined his relationship with the Other.
