The Danger of Looking for Power
PiranesiThis flow examines how the pursuit of power changes from speculative research into a mechanism for domination, exposing the moral divide between the Other and Piranesi.

Imagining Control

Power as a Goal
The Other’s ambitions
The Other imagines telepathy, immortality, flight, and the ability to dominate lesser minds. His list assumes that knowledge is valuable when it increases control.
Piranesi’s reservations
Piranesi sees no reason to control another person and is largely indifferent to immortality. His uncertainty about the project is ethical as much as scientific.
The House Denigrated

A World Called Lifeless
The Other’s contempt
The Other describes the halls as dreary rooms filled with decaying figures. He sees little living power in the place he wants to exploit.
Piranesi’s countervision
Piranesi sees tides, creatures, birds, and distinct architecture. The disagreement reveals that the Other can inhabit a world without recognizing its value.
A New Science Imagined

Inquiry Without Extraction
A different research program
Piranesi imagines abandoning the search and following evidence wherever it leads. The House can be studied without being treated as a means to hidden powers.
An unresolved partnership
The Other dismisses the proposal and insists that their objectives must remain his. Scientific disagreement becomes a struggle over who has authority to define their shared work.
Knowledge Used as a Threat

Power Through Information
A story imposed
The Other claims that 16 can infect Piranesi’s mind and that Piranesi may need to be killed. He uses his knowledge of Piranesi’s memory loss to make the threat sound reasonable.
Control without magic
No supernatural ability is required. The Other’s manipulation works through isolation, selective truth, and the authority Piranesi has granted him.
The Power Refused

Refusing the Other’s Plan
A gun against a person
The Other brings a gun and orders Piranesi to help attack Raphael. Piranesi rejects the role of assistant and warns her instead.
Judgment after power
The Other’s pursuit of control ends in his death, while Piranesi tends his remains. The contrast shows that power can secure neither wisdom nor a right to dominate others.
