The White Visitor

A Visitor in the Wind
An unexpected arrival
Piranesi encounters an albatross gliding into a lower hall while he gathers seaweed. Its immense wings make it appear almost heavenly in flight, though it lands awkwardly on the stone.
Recognition across difference
He welcomes the bird rather than treating it as an intrusion. His response shows how readily he imagines the House as a shared habitat.
A Pair in the Vestibule

A New Neighbourhood
The second bird
Piranesi returns and finds another albatross with the first. He watches their greeting and takes their reunion as a sign that the House has gained a pair of inhabitants.
Attention without certainty
He does not know which bird is male or female, and admits the limits of his evidence. His care begins with observing them rather than claiming to understand them completely.
Materials for a Nest

Giving Up Warmth
Reading their need
Piranesi notices that the birds repeatedly rearrange damp seaweed. He infers that they are trying to build a nest but need dry material.
A costly gift
He gives them dry seaweed, feathers, and an old jumper, despite knowing the fuel will be missed. The sacrifice expresses his belief that a new life matters more than a few colder days.
The Chick’s Arrival

A Life Takes Root
From nest to egg
The pair builds a tall nest and lays an egg. Piranesi watches their devotion and later notes their diligence in raising the chick.
A wider household
The House is no longer only the setting of Piranesi’s solitary routines. Its life includes the slow growth of another creature that he helped make possible.
A Promise to the Birds

Reassurance After the Waters
The flooded halls
After the storm, birds gather around Piranesi and Raphael. He tells them that the water will recede, speaking to them as fellow inhabitants rather than scenery.
Care continues
Even after betrayal and danger, Piranesi returns to familiar acts of reassurance. His compassion is a practice that survives changes in identity and circumstance.
