The Disappeared Circle
PiranesiThis flow follows the vanished people associated with Arne-Sayles as their separate histories become evidence of a larger pattern of coercion and mystery.

A Circle Takes Shape

Students Around a Teacher
An intense group
Stanley Ovenden, Sylvia D’Agostino, and Valentine Ketterley are connected through Laurence Arne-Sayles and his claims about lost knowledge. His ideas attract people seeking intellectual and spiritual possibilities.
Doubt within devotion
The group is not unified in its response. Ovenden questions the work, Sylvia becomes deeply devoted, and Ketterley later repudiates his former teacher.
Giussani Vanishes

The Missing Student
A final evening
Maurizio Giussani attends a dinner with Arne-Sayles and his circle, then disappears after reportedly walking home. The people present give an account that leaves unanswered questions.
A mystery carried forward
The disappearance remains unresolved, and the later discovery of Matthew’s journals connects Giussani’s name to a wider history of missing people. His fate cannot be established with certainty.
Sylvia’s Devotion

Devotion and Separation
A loyalty demanded
Sylvia D’Agostino follows Arne-Sayles closely, even abandoning contact with her parents after he instructs her to quarrel with them. Her devotion costs her relationships and independence.
A different path
She later resists his demand that she leave a job and friendship. Soon afterward she disappears, leaving behind films and coded writing that preserve traces of a life he had shaped.
James Behind the Wall

Captivity and Confusion
A hidden prisoner
Arne-Sayles keeps James Ritter confined behind a false wall. When found, Ritter is gravely ill and struggles to distinguish the house from the labyrinth he describes.
A story others dismiss
Ritter’s account of tides, statues, and the minotaurs sounds like delusion to authorities. Its correspondence with the House makes his experience more disturbing, without resolving what happened to him there.
Bones and Names

The Dead Reunited
Identifying the remains
Piranesi recognizes that the people named in the old journals may include Stanley Ovenden, Maurizio Giussani, and Sylvia D’Agostino. Their bones have endured in the House without their identities being known to him.
A belated return
He places Valentine Ketterley’s remains beside his colleagues after the tides have cleansed them. The vanished circle becomes a community of dead people, cared for rather than forgotten.
