Ronia’s first encounter with the gray dwarfs

Ronja, the Robber's Daughter

Ronia’s first encounter with the gray dwarfs is the first time her confidence in Matt’s Forest is tested by a threat she cannot see or manage alone. On a night she had believed darkness could not frighten her, the gray dwarfs surround her on a boulder; Matt’s rescue turns mortal panic into a lesson about how fear can make the forest’s dangers more perilous.

The Night in the Forest

Ronia is alone after dark, ready to leave the lake when she remembers the leather bag that carried her food. She climbs back onto the boulder to retrieve it. The stars are reflected in the lake, but everywhere else is pitch-black. Darkness itself does not trouble her: she remembers that Matt’s Fort is darker still on winter nights after the fire has gone out. This recollection gives her confidence, but the episode sharply distinguishes familiar darkness from the danger hidden within it.

From the boulder, Ronia stretches up her hands as if she might pluck a star and carry it home in her bag. The fanciful gesture belongs to a quiet, solitary moment; when she turns to climb down, she discovers that the stone is ringed with shining eyes. She has not noticed their approach. The sudden recognition that she is being watched transforms the familiar forest night into an enclosure, with the creatures below and no obvious way off the boulder.

The Gray Dwarfs Close In

Ronia calls out to ask what the watchers want, but they do not answer. Instead, they move closer a little at a time, while strange old voices murmur and drone together. Their chant identifies them as gray dwarfs and announces their intention to bite and strike. Ronia cannot yet see what is making the voices; she hears the threat before the creatures become visible, and even then their bodies remain indistinct in the darkness. The danger is first conveyed through the ring of eyes, the advancing voices, and the sound of movement, allowing fear to grow before Ronia can make out her attackers.

When the gray dwarfs reach the boulder, they beat on the stone with sticks, clubs, or whatever they have with them. Their blows resound in the great silence. Ronia screams, and the banging stops, but the pause brings no relief: she hears the creatures climbing up from every side, their feet scraping and their voices repeating the chant. The threat has changed from a hostile presence below her to an assault closing around her on the rock.

Ronia swings the leather bag wildly as the gray dwarfs climb. She believes they will soon reach her and bite her to death, and in that moment the forest seems to have made her first day in it her last. The food bag, previously a practical thing she had carried and retrieved, becomes her only makeshift defense. The episode’s reversal is stark: her solitude had seemed safe because she was unafraid of darkness, but she is now trapped in darkness among creatures whose intentions she understands too late.

Matt’s Rescue

At the moment Ronia despairs, she hears a yell that she recognizes as Matt’s. He comes through the trees with all his robbers and their torches flaring; his voice carries through the forest as he orders the gray dwarfs to leave and threatens to slaughter them. The torches make the creatures visible as they flee: small gray bodies throw themselves off the boulder and disappear into the dark. The sudden shift from unseen attackers to fleeing shapes gives the encounter a clear resolution, but it does not erase how close Ronia came to being overwhelmed.

Ronia sits on the leather bag and slides down the steep boulder. Matt catches her immediately, carries her home to Matt’s Fort, and holds her while she weeps into his beard. The encounter ends not with Ronia defeating the gray dwarfs, but with rescue and physical comfort. Her fear is made plain in her tears, just as Matt’s arrival makes his protectiveness concrete: he has come with the whole robber band, and catches her as soon as she descends.

What the Encounter Teaches

By the fire at Matt’s Fort, Matt tells Ronia that she now knows what gray dwarfs are, but not yet how to deal with them. He explains that if someone is frightened, the creatures can sense it from far away, and that this is when they become dangerous. His account recasts the episode without diminishing its peril: Ronia was right to fear creatures that surrounded and attacked her, but fear itself also belongs to the danger she must learn to face.

Lovis broadens Matt’s warning into a principle for life in the forest. She says the same is true of all sorts of things, and that the safest course is not to be frightened in Matt’s Forest. Ronia answers that she will remember. The exchange gives the episode an aftermath beyond the rescue: what began as an encounter with a particular supernatural threat becomes instruction about how to inhabit a dangerous place. Ronia’s earlier confidence in darkness is not enough; she must learn that knowing the forest also means understanding how her own fear affects her encounters within it.
