Maeda clan

Shōgun

The Maeda clan is identified as one of the forces drawn secretly to Toranaga’s side through Toda Mariko’s mission to Osaka and Lady Etsu’s courage and self-sacrifice. Its allegiance matters beyond the clan itself: Toranaga sees the Maedas as a path to influence across the western seaboard and as part of a wider coalition assembled through sacrifice and political timing.

Political Position

The account of the clan comes through Toranaga’s retrospective assessment of the crisis. He recalls that Mariko’s journey into the Void was necessary to secure the hostages’ release, and credits her courage, together with Lady Etsu’s, with committing another fifty allies and binding the Maedas to him. The clan’s alignment is therefore presented as a consequential political gain, achieved indirectly through the actions of women rather than through a battlefield victory described in the passage.

Place in Toranaga’s Strategy

Toranaga connects the Maedas’ allegiance to the western seaboard, treating their commitment as a means of widening his support beyond his immediate circle. In the same assessment, he links the broader effects of Mariko’s actions to drawing Ishido out of his stronghold, splitting the Regents, and breaking Ochiba and Kiyama’s opposition. The Maedas are thus part of a coordinated political shift: their support helps turn Mariko’s mission and sacrifice into leverage in the struggle for power.

Significance and Limits of the Account

The clan appears at a decisive moment, when Toranaga measures what Mariko accomplished after her death. His recollection emphasizes that her loyalty gave him time, while her actions and Lady Etsu’s bound allies to his side. The passage establishes the Maedas’ secret commitment and its regional consequence, but does not detail the clan’s internal leadership, military strength, or subsequent actions. Its significance here lies in the political reach Toranaga attributes to its allegiance and in the human cost through which that allegiance was secured.
