Mosquitoes

Shōgun

Mosquitoes are briefly noted as an ordinary environmental nuisance in a sunset scene aboard Toranaga’s galley. Their presence prompts a small practical measure amid the formal preparations on deck.

Setting and Appearance

At anchor in a bay, the galley carries Toranaga and his attendants on its poop deck. A small charcoal brazier holds pieces of aromatic wood; the smoke perfumes the air and is used to keep away the dusk gnats and mosquitoes.

Practical Function

The insects are not given an independent role in the scene, but their mention makes the deck’s arrangements serve both ceremony and comfort. The brazier stands near Toranaga’s clean futons while samurai keep silent guard, and flares are set out around the calmly anchored galley.
