Ben Caxton’s return to the Nest

Stranger in a Strange Land

Ben Caxton’s return to the Nest becomes a quiet reversal: confronted by Jubal over his treatment of Jill and his priorities, Ben leaves, sends money, and then stays to study Martian. The episode turns his renewed presence from a brief visit into a commitment to learning within the community.

The Rebuke

Jubal challenges Ben for claiming to love Jill while giving her less consideration than he would give a crooked politician. He recalls the effort Jill made to help Ben when he was kidnapped and asks him to consider what might have happened had she tried so feebly. Jubal also redirects Ben’s complaint about the young people’s friendly fornication toward a larger danger, invoking the account of Christ’s crucifixion for preaching without a police permit. His rebuke links Ben’s personal judgment of the Nest to the threat of official power.

Departure and Return

Ben stands and announces that he is on his way. Jubal tells him to wait until after lunch, but Ben insists on going at once. The exchange ends without a stated reconciliation or explanation, leaving Ben’s response to emerge through what he does afterward rather than through an immediate declaration.

Money and Study

Twenty-four hours later, Ben wires Jubal two thousand dollars. When a week passes without another message, Jubal sends a stat to Ben’s office asking what he is doing. Ben’s delayed reply says that he is studying Martian and the rules for hopscotch, and signs off fraternally. The money and the answer together make his return consequential: he has not simply reappeared but has invested in the Nest and begun learning its language and practices.

Significance

The episode shifts Ben from argument at a distance toward participation. Jubal’s appeal begins with Jill’s past care for Ben, but its warning expands beyond their relationship to the possibility of religious persecution. Ben’s eventual answer is practical rather than rhetorical: he sends funds, remains to study, and describes that study through both Martian and hopscotch. The brief sequence thus marks his renewed connection with the Nest as a commitment to learn, not merely to observe.
