I am a race of one

Stranger in a Strange Land

“I am a race of one” names the defining paradox of Valentine Michael Smith: he is human, yet stands alone as a human among the Martians who raised him. The expression condenses both his singular identity and the danger of the expedition that left him the sole survivor of his kind on Mars.

Meaning and Context

The phrase is introduced through a compact, fairy-tale-like account: when the world was young, there was a Martian named Smith. The narration immediately complicates that image by establishing that Valentine Michael Smith was real, but a race of one. The wording makes isolation more than a circumstance; it becomes the measure by which his identity is first presented.

The Expedition Behind the Expression

Smith’s singularity is set against the first human expedition from Terra to Mars. The journey was planned on the premise that humanity itself posed the greatest danger to people in space, and the primitive route made every expedition exceptionally vulnerable. The Envoy’s outward trip took 258 days, followed by 455 days waiting on Mars for the planets to return to a workable alignment, and then another 258 days for the return: almost three Earth years in all.

The ship’s survival was uncertain at every stage. It needed refueling at a space station and had to tack back almost into Earth’s atmosphere to manage the journey. At Mars, a return depended on a safe landing, finding water for reaction mass, and finding food, among innumerable other contingencies. Against this background, “a race of one” carries the weight of an expedition’s human vulnerability as well as Smith’s personal aloneness.

Narrative Significance

The expression links a sweeping premise to an individual: the first human contact with Mars produces not a community of survivors, but one human life set apart. By calling Smith a race, the narration makes his isolation sound at once biological and social; by calling him real, it insists that this striking figure is not merely legend. That tension establishes the terms of his introduction without yet explaining the full history of his survival.
