Lacus Soli

Stranger in a Strange Land

Lacus Soli is the Martian region that frames the first human landing attempt and the later return to the planet. The Envoy announced its intended landing there before contact ceased; decades later, the Champion landed nearby to search for the missing ship, and its crew reported both the Envoy’s fate and the existence of Martian inhabitants. The place thus becomes the hinge between an unanswered disappearance and a world-changing discovery.

The Envoy’s Intended Landing

After reaching a parking orbit just inside Phobos, the Envoy spent two weeks conducting a photographic survey. Captain Brant then radioed that the ship would attempt a landing at 1200 the following day, GST, just south of Lacus Soli. No further message was received. The coordinates are the last reported plan of the expedition: the narrative names its destination precisely, then leaves the attempt and the ship’s fate unresolved.

The Champion’s Search

When humans returned to Mars, the Champion landed just south of Lacus Soli under Captain van Tromp’s command. The landing site gave the new expedition a direct connection to the Envoy’s final transmission: the Champion had come to search for the lost ship, not merely to survey the planet. Its daily radio dispatches kept Earth informed, and the first major report stated that the Envoy had been located and that there were no survivors.

Narrative Significance

The repeated reference to the area creates a stark contrast between the two expeditions. For the Envoy, Lacus Soli is the announced threshold of a landing from which no report returns; for the Champion, the nearby landing makes the search’s grim answer public. The next dispatch changes the meaning of the mission again: Mars is inhabited. Lacus Soli therefore anchors the transition from a mystery about a lost crew to the revelation that the planet is a living world.
