Alexei Kalganov
The Brothers KaramazovAlexei Kalganov is a young gentleman staying at the inn in Mokroe whose brief appearances place him among the witnesses to Dmitri’s second all-night revel. He greets Dmitri warmly, checks his reckless gambling, and later confirms that the Polish player cheated—small interventions that help shift the gathering from convivial play to indignation and accusation.
Identity and Introduction
Kalganov is introduced indirectly as one of two gentlemen from town who have returned from Tcherny and are lodging at the inn. The other guest is identified as Maximov, a pilgrim; the speaker cannot remember Kalganov’s name, and describes him only as a young gentleman, perhaps a relative of Miusov. His entrance into the episode is thus modest and slightly uncertain, framed through the casual talk of people trying to identify the guests.
Encounter with Dmitri
When Dmitri recognizes him, Kalganov answers with sudden familiarity and invites him to sit down with the group. The greeting establishes that the two know one another, though the brief exchange does not explain the history of their acquaintance. Kalganov’s cordial welcome places him inside the revel’s circle just as the evening’s gambling and drinking are gathering force.
Intervention at the Card Table
As Dmitri loses money, he tries to double his wager by throwing another two hundred roubles onto the queen. Kalganov covers the money with his hand and calls out that it is enough. The gesture interrupts Dmitri’s impulsive escalation: rather than merely observing the loss, Kalganov physically prevents the next bet from being placed.
Witness to Cheating
Later, when Dmitri accuses the Pole of cheating, Kalganov supports the charge with a specific observation: he says that he saw the Pole change a card twice. His testimony gives the accusation an independent witness and contributes to the exposure of the card game as dishonest. The scene reverses the evening’s atmosphere: the guests’ entertainment gives way to shame and outrage, voiced by Grushenka as well as Dmitri. Kalganov’s role remains brief, but at a crucial turn he acts both to restrain Dmitri’s spending and to confirm what happened at the table.
