Death of Father Zossima

The Brothers Karamazov

Father Zossima’s death is both unexpectedly sudden and marked by a final act of joyful prayer. Though those gathered with him understand that he is nearing death, they cannot foresee its arrival; when it comes, he meets it by lowering himself to the ground and kissing it before quietly giving up his soul to God.

The Suddenness of His Death

The people around Father Zossima have spent the evening aware that his death is approaching, yet that knowledge does not prepare them for its exact moment. Even five minutes beforehand, they later say, his passing seemed impossible to foresee. The account makes the distinction between an expected end and an unforeseeable instant: his death is near, but its sudden arrival still shocks those present.

His Final Gesture

Father Zossima feels acute pain in his chest, turns pale, and presses his hands to his heart. Those around him rise and hurry to him. Although suffering, he looks at them with a smile, slowly sinks from his chair onto his knees, bows his face to the ground, and stretches out his arms. He dies while praying and kissing the ground, in a posture described as joyful ecstasy. The movement gives his last moments a character of humble, embodied devotion rather than a spoken farewell.

News and Immediate Aftermath

The news spreads at once through the hermitage and reaches the monastery. The death thus passes immediately from the intimate circle gathered around him into the wider religious community, where it becomes a shared event. The contrast between the quietness of his passing and the speed with which it is reported frames the transition from a private deathbed scene to its consequences for those who revered him.
