Grushenka and Dmitri Karamazov

The Brothers Karamazov

Grushenka and Dmitri Karamazov are bound by a love that Grushenka describes as both real and painfully brief. Their relationship unsettles her earlier candor with the old man Kuzma Kuzmitch Samsonov, becomes entangled with her contemplated return to a former lover, and ends in a message of regret sent through Alyosha: she says she loved Dmitri for only one short hour, yet asks him to remember that hour all his life.

A divided attachment

Throughout her acquaintance with Kuzma Kuzmitch Samsonov, Grushenka is described as spontaneously open with him in a way she is with no one else. Dmitri’s arrival as a rival lover changes the old man’s response: he stops laughing and gives Grushenka stern advice about choosing between father and son. The episode places her relationship with Dmitri in a triangle of rivalry and choice, rather than presenting it as a settled courtship.

Grushenka later tells Alyosha that she has deceived Dmitri. She had made him promise to believe her, then lied when she said she would spend the evening with Kuzma Kuzmitch Samsonov, counting money with him until late. Her admission makes the deception specific: she has not merely concealed her intentions but asked Dmitri’s trust while directing him toward a false account of where she would be.

Dmitri’s absence and Grushenka’s confession

When Alyosha arrives, Grushenka is afraid that Dmitri has broken in. She says that he does not know where she is going; if he knew, she believes, there would be murder. Yet she says she is no longer afraid of his knife. Her fear of the possible violence and her insistence that she is not afraid of the weapon coexist with the more intimate claim that Dmitri has bruised her heart.

Rather than think about Dmitri, Grushenka turns her attention to Alyosha, asking him to smile and to cheer her in her pleasure. She also names her own anger and vindictiveness: she has been raging at herself for a month and says she is worse than she was five years before. Then she explains that she played with Dmitri to prevent herself from running to the other man. The admission joins her treatment of Dmitri to an effort to resist—or delay—another attachment, while refusing to excuse the hurt that her deception has caused.

A message carried to Dmitri

As Alyosha and Rakitin leave, Grushenka opens her bedroom window and calls after Alyosha with a message for Dmitri. She asks him to say that she does not want Dmitri to remember evil against her, although she has brought him misery. She describes herself as having fallen to a scoundrel rather than to Dmitri, whom she calls a noble heart, and instructs Alyosha to convey the words as hers.

Her final claim gives the relationship its most striking measure: Grushenka says that she loved Dmitri for only one hour, “only one short hour,” and asks him to remember that hour all his life. The declaration does not erase her betrayal or promise a future together. It makes a fleeting experience of love the one thing she wants preserved between them. Her voice fills with sobs; she shuts the window with a slam, converting an intimate confession into a farewell delivered across a threshold.

Significance of the relationship

The relationship is shaped by contradiction rather than by a simple choice between two men. Grushenka acknowledges her capacity for vindictiveness and admits that she used Dmitri to hold herself back from another attachment; at the same time, she insists that her love for him was genuine, however short. The language of one hour gives the bond both its limit and its emotional force: the love cannot undo the misery she has caused, but she asks that Dmitri remember it rather than only the injury.

Alyosha’s role is essential to the ending. Grushenka does not address Dmitri directly; she entrusts her apology and declaration to his brother, specifying what Alyosha should report. Her relationship with Dmitri thus closes, in this episode, through mediated speech: a lie once kept him from knowing her plans, while a last message asks that the truth of her brief love reach him.
