Volovya station
The Brothers KaramazovVolovya station is the railway stop at the center of a failed fundraising journey by Dmitri Karamazov. Its significance lies in the contrast between the station as a practical connection to the road ahead and the delays that make reaching it a measure of how far his plans have gone astray: the wrong route lengthens his journey, the person he seeks is absent, and he must struggle back before continuing toward town.
Setting and Route
Volovya station is connected to Ilyinskoe, where a priest is staying, and to Tchermashnya, the location of a copse whose disputed sale has drawn the priest into correspondence. The reported distance from the station to Ilyinskoe is about twelve versts. This geography first appears as an opportunity: Dmitri might get to the priest before Fyodor Pavlovich, who intends to visit him about the copse business.
But the journey does not follow the distance Dmitri expects. Taking a shortcut from Volovya station, he discovers that the route is eighteen versts rather than twelve. The extra distance turns what had looked like a direct approach into a punishing detour, consuming time and exhausting the horses as well as the traveler.
The Station in Dmitri’s Fundraising Journey
Before setting out, Dmitri has collected nine roubles and sent for posting-horses to take him to Volovya station. His departure is later remembered as evidence that at midday on the day before the event he had no money to spare and had sold his watch to obtain funds. The station is therefore tied not only to his route but also to the small, precarious resources with which he tries to pursue his objective.
From the station, Dmitri takes the road toward Ilyinskoe to find the priest. The attempt fails: the priest has gone to a neighboring village. Dmitri sets out in search of him with the same exhausted horses, and by the time he is still looking, it is almost dark. The station’s promise of access has thus produced neither a meeting nor the advice he needs; the delay leaves him stranded in an increasingly difficult journey.
Return and Narrative Significance
After his search, Dmitri walks on through fields bare after the harvest, repeating his despair at the death all around him. He is eventually saved from continuing alone when he meets an old merchant traveling in a hired trap. The merchant is also bound for Volovya, and Dmitri joins him. Three hours later they arrive at the station.
Dmitri immediately orders posting-horses to take him to town. As they are harnessed, he realizes how terribly hungry he is, and an omelette is prepared while he waits. Volovya station is consequently both the destination of a difficult return and a brief place of renewed movement: Dmitri reaches it only after the failed search and the walk across the fields, then leaves again without securing the help he had sought. The repeated passage through the station gives the episode its stark rhythm of intention, delay, and hurried continuation.
