Miranda's illness

Miranda falls seriously ill with pneumonia, a consequence of the damp cellar and her weakened state. Frederick, despite his obsession, is reluctant to call a doctor for fear of being discovered. He tries to nurse her himself, but his incompetence and fear of exposure prevent him from getting proper medical help. Her condition deteriorates rapidly.
