The Housewife Study

Therapy with an Agenda
A request for participation
Dr. Hilarius presses Oedipa to join a community study of psychedelic drugs. His demand makes the clinical relationship feel less like neutral care than recruitment.
Trust erodes
Oedipa worries about the pills and refuses the experiment. Hilarius’s casual insistence deepens her sense that she cannot know what his treatment is intended to do.
A Night Call

A Doctor’s Unsettling Voice
The late telephone call
Hilarius calls Oedipa in the middle of the night and asks about her medication. His voice resembles Pierce’s impersonations, intensifying her distrust and confusion.
A broken boundary
He treats the patient as a potential research subject, while she questions whether she can trust the treatment. Their professional relationship is already unstable before his later breakdown.
The Clinic Under Fire

Gunfire at the Clinic
A locked office
Oedipa arrives at the Kinneret clinic to find Hilarius barricaded inside with a rifle. He believes armed pursuers are coming for him, and the police surround the building.
A familiar patient enters
Instead of fleeing, Oedipa approaches the office and becomes trapped with him. The clinician’s authority has collapsed into a dangerous crisis that reverses their usual roles.
The Confession of Buchenwald

The Past Behind the Doctor
A concealed history
Hilarius admits that he participated in experiments designed to induce insanity at Buchenwald. He says he later chose Freud as a form of penance, attempting to believe that treatment could domesticate horror.
Penance fails
His present terror exposes the limits of that self-explanation. The man who tried to impose meaning on other minds now fears that persecutors can enter every room and erase the distinction between himself and others.
A Release into Custody

The Rifle Lowered
Oedipa changes the outcome
Oedipa takes Hilarius’s rifle and recognizes that he wants her to shoot him, but she refuses. She calls the police into the office instead of becoming his executioner.
The doctor removed
Hilarius is taken to the community hospital for observation. Oedipa’s act ends the immediate threat without repairing the relationship or answering how much of his persecution was real.
