The Runner Theory

An Apparent Stranger
The CCTV puzzle
John Bristow’s notes focus Strike on a masked man walking toward 18 Kentigern Gardens and later running away. Police had considered the figures but found no evidence tying them to Lula’s flat.
A useful misdirection
Strike treats the footage as a lead, not a verdict. He studies the runners’ separate paths, their clothing, and the second man’s movement, while recognizing that a blurry image can invite more certainty than it deserves.
The Unique Hoodie

Clothing as Identification
A rare garment
Strike learns that Guy Somé sent Deeby Macc a customized hoodie bearing lyrics and a distinctive design. Macc received only one such garment, making its appearance in the CCTV footage more significant than the widely sold GS clothing.
The trail turns inward
The hoodie places the runner inside the building rather than identifying an unknown street criminal. A man with access to the middle flat could borrow the outfit, enter unseen, and leave dressed to confuse witnesses.
The Office Confrontation

The Accusation
A recorded reckoning
Strike tells Bristow that Lula’s will named Jonah Agyeman and that the runner’s clothing came from the building. He explains how Bristow could have entered the middle flat, waited, and used the roses to lure Lula to her door.
Violence and arrest
Bristow attacks Strike with a knife, confirming the danger of the confrontation. Strike fights back with his prosthetic leg, and Robin returns in time to call for police and an ambulance.
