Easter Sunday, 1983

The Cuckoo's Calling

Easter Sunday, 1983 is the date behind the safe code John Bristow chose to restrict access to evidence he had kept. When the code is decoded, it identifies the day he killed Charlie Bristow, turning an apparently arbitrary number into a link between John’s concealed past and the investigation into Lula Landry’s death.

The Date and the Safe

At the end of the investigation, Strike explains that police found Rochelle Onifade’s mobile phone in John’s mother’s safe. John had reset the safe’s code so that only he could open it: 030483. Strike identifies the numbers as Easter Sunday, 1983, the day John killed Strike’s friend Charlie. The date therefore serves as more than a private mnemonic: the code’s discovery ties John to the phone and points back to the earlier killing.

Earlier Crimes and Recovered Clues

The date’s significance is clarified by the investigation’s reconstruction of Lula’s death. Strike revisits Derrick Wilson’s search of Lula’s flat, asking him to demonstrate the order in which he moved through the rooms. On the stairs, Wilson unexpectedly remembers slipping backwards on water. Strike later explains that John had carried white roses from another flat, wiped their stems, and left small drops of water behind; Wilson’s fall was an accidental consequence of that trace. The recovered detail shows how a minor physical clue can reopen a seemingly settled account of the crime.

Strike’s examination of the police file also leaves the Bestiguis’ movements at the moment Lula fell uncertain. Tansy’s accounts shifted, and she consistently maintained that her husband had been asleep. Strike had noticed her gesture of shielding her face when pressed on the point, and concluded that the precise location of both spouses was not established. This uncertainty belongs to the investigation’s larger method: statements are tested against circumstances and physical evidence rather than accepted as a complete account.

Meaning in the Investigation’s Ending

The number 030483 joins two strands of the case: Rochelle’s phone, which John had kept hidden, and Charlie’s death, which Strike personally remembers. The safe’s reset code makes the earlier crime legible through a present-day piece of evidence, while the phone helps confirm that John did not dispose of an object linking him to Rochelle. The date thus becomes a compact record of concealment and disclosure: a past killing preserved in a code, exposed when the investigation reaches the safe.
