Reasonable force

The Cuckoo's Calling

Reasonable force is the legal standard Cormoran Strike invokes after breaking John Bristow’s jaw and nose during Bristow’s armed attempt to kill him. In a conversation with Jonah Agyeman, Strike presents the injuries as force he was fortunate to justify because Bristow had stabbed him first; the exchange also reveals that Strike had anticipated Bristow’s plan to disguise a second murder as the work of another man.

The Standard in Strike’s Account

Strike explains that he might not have escaped prosecution for the assault were it not for the fact that Bristow had put a knife into him. Jonah observes that Bristow came armed, and Strike agrees that this mattered to the question of whether his response counted as reasonable force. The detail makes the legal principle concrete: Strike’s broken jaw and nose are not presented as violence without context, but as injuries inflicted in a confrontation in which he had already been stabbed.

The Trap Behind the Confrontation

The conversation also discloses how Strike had influenced the circumstances surrounding the attack. At Rochelle Onifade’s funeral, he had his secretary tell Bristow that a supposed mentally unstable person was threatening to slit Strike open. Strike believed Bristow could use this planted story as cover, framing Strike’s death as the work of Brian Mathers. In Strike’s reconstruction, Bristow would then have returned home, tampered with his mother’s clock, and tried to repeat the deception.

Meaning and Limits

Strike’s cheerful acknowledgment that he broke both Bristow’s jaw and nose sits beside his careful reference to reasonable force: the exchange combines blunt satisfaction with an awareness that the violence had to be legally defensible. His explanation does not treat the law as an abstract rule; it ties the justification to the armed attack and to the danger Strike faced. At the same time, his account shows the distinction between Bristow’s apparent irrationality and his capacity for calculation: Strike calls him not sane, but still clever enough to stage a false explanation for murder.
