Spanner

The Cuckoo's Calling

Spanner, also known to Cormoran Strike as Fed or Federico, is a computer-science graduate whose technical expertise makes him a useful, if initially cautious, source of help in the investigation of Lula Landry’s death. Asked to examine Lula’s laptop, he identifies a recently reset password—Agyeman—which points toward a significant strand of Lula’s personal history.

Identity and Introduction

Spanner appears in a London restaurant while Strike is examining Lula’s pink laptop. He is pale and straggly-haired, dressed casually in jeans, a psychedelic T-shirt, and Converse sneakers, with a leather bag worn across his chest. Strike calls him Spanner, a nickname he has used for reasons neither man discusses; Spanner calls Strike Federico and, in the same conversation, Fed.

Spanner is the younger brother of one of Strike’s old friends. He has a first-class degree in computer science and earns considerably more than his informal appearance might suggest. His professional qualifications establish that his involvement is not a favor from an amateur: Strike seeks a second technical assessment of evidence already examined by the police.

Role in the Investigation

Strike asks Spanner to look at Lula’s laptop because he wants an independent opinion, although he acknowledges that the police have already used technical specialists. Spanner doubts he will find anything they missed. His reluctance makes the result more pointed: he has not entered the task promising a breakthrough, but he does uncover information Strike considers important enough to request the essentials first.

The key finding is that the laptop password was reset five days before Lula died. The password was Agyeman, which Spanner identifies as a Ghanaian surname. He has found it through the computer’s browsing history: Lula had bookmarked the homepage of the School of Oriental and African Studies, and the surname appeared there. The password therefore links a practical detail of the laptop to Lula’s search for her family background.

Character and Narrative Function

Spanner’s response to Strike’s personal news establishes his brisk, unsentimental manner. Strike tells him that his engagement to Charlotte has ended, and Spanner responds briefly before redirecting his attention to the laptop. The exchange is not evidence that he is indifferent to everyone; rather, it shows how quickly his attention turns from emotional discussion to a technical problem he can work on.

That same practicality serves the mystery. Spanner does not solve Lula’s death, but he converts an obscure computer detail into a lead with personal significance. The contrast between the password’s apparent simplicity and the history it opens up gives his brief contribution weight: the machine’s access code points beyond its files, toward Lula’s effort to understand where she came from.
